Christos Comninellis
Christos Comninellis, of Greek origin, born in 1945, received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry (distinction with honor) in 1970 from the University of Alexandria.
From 1971 to 1975, he worked as a chemist at the Institute of chemical engineering at the EPFL, where he achieved his PhD in technical sciences in 1979 for his research on the electrochemical fluorination of organic compounds in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.
Appointed professor in 1996, he teaches at the Faculty of Basic Sciences (FSB) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL)

He also holds a teaching position at the Haute Ecole Valaisanne Sion (HEVs).
His research work is focused on environmental electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, fuel cell and electrochemical promotion in catalysis. An applied research for the utilization of electrochemical techniques in industry for the protection of the environment is a constant concern within his activities. As a result, the collaboration with the industry enabled the development of oxidation processes with regeneration of the oxidant using a new type of bipolar electrochemical reactor.
Christos Comninellis has published over 170 scientific papers, directed 17 doctoral theses and holds 14 patents. He has participated in over 130 international symposia, giving five plenary lectures during the last five years. He has been president of the Evaluation Committee of the FSB since the beginning of 2004 and is member of the jury of the EPFL prize for outstanding PhD-thesis.

Pierre Magistretti
Pierre J. Magistretti is an internationally-recognized neuroscientist who has made significant contributions in the field of brain energy metabolism. His group has discovered some of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the coupling between neuronal activity and energy consumption by the brain.
This work has considerable ramifications for the understanding of the origin of the signals detected with the current functional brain imaging techniques used in neurological and psychiatric research (see for example Magistretti et al, Science, 283: 496 497, 1999). He is the author of over 100 articles published in peer-reviewed journals.
He has given over 80 invited lectures at international meetings or at universities in Europe and North America, including the 2000 Talairach Lecture at the Functional Mapping of the Human Brain Conference. In November 2000 he has been a Mc Donnel Visiting Scholar at Washington University School of Medicine.
Pierre J. Magistretti is the President-Elect (2002 2004) of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) which has a membership of over 15000 European neuroscientists. He has been first president of the Swiss Society for Neuroscience (1997-1999) and the first Chairman of the Department of Neurosciences of the University of Lausanne (1996 1998).
Pierre J. Magistretti is Professor of Physiology (since 1988) at the University of Lausanne Medical School. He has been Vice-Dean of the University of Lausanne Medical School from 1996 to 2000. Pierre Magistretti, is Director of the Brain Mind Institute at EPFL and Director of the Center for Psychiatric Neuroscience of the University of Lausanne and CHUV. He is also Director of the NCCR SYNAPSY "the synaptic bases of mental diseases".

Caroline Vandevyver
Caroline Vandevyver received her degree in biochemistry in 1985 from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium and her Ph.D. degree in biotechnology at the same university in 1989.
She joined the Biomedical Research Institute "Dr. L- Willems Instituut" in Hasselt, Belgium, in 1989. Subsequently, she has worked there on T cell mediated autoimmune diseases (Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis), genetic association and linkage studies in multifactorial diseases, mutation analysis of genetic disorders (Phenylketonuria, alpha 1 anti-trypsine deficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia) and the development of active and passive immune therapies for cancer.
She joined EPFL in 2000 at the Laboratory of Chemical Biotechnology headed by Prof. Ruth Freitag, where she was responsible for the cell culture lab and the (recombinant) protein purification and characterization. She joined the Laboratory of Lanthanide Supramolecular Chemistry (LCSL) in May 2006, where she was responsible for the live cell imaging project with Lanthanide complexes.
In 2005, she joined the Office of the Research Commission. Her duties there were the management of national and international fellowship programs, the management of local research awards and the promotion of research performed at EPFL. In August 2013, she was nominated coordinator of the International Funding, one of the pillars of the Research Office at EPFL. Since January 2017, she is the Head of EPFL's Research Office.
