Overview over the design (and planning) of Urban energy systems

This report presents some approaches to modelize urban energy systems. More precisely, as a first step, a clear definition of what is an urban energy system model is exposed before listing the main tech- niques of modelization. With the goal to run a case study, two of these techniques are developed, the technology design and the system design. The latter is characterized by the use of optimization tools, which are briefly explained. Softwares like OSMOSE are run thanks to optimization methods, that is why the decomposition of an opti- mization sequence and then the software itself are presented. Finally, the theoretical part of this report is closed by the introduction of a central notion when modelizing and optimizing urban energy systems, the pinch analysis. The second part of the present report illustrates the use of the tools and concepts seen by then through a case study. Playing with two conflictive objectives, OSMOSE is run to find the best trade off for the example of the Meyrin Site, exploited by the CERN.

Ce projet a pour but de concevoir une électronique de commande pour un hélicoptère de 7.2g. L’hélicoptère est un birotor coaxial presque intégralement en fibre de carbone, ce qui lui permet d’être très léger. La rotation des hélices est assurée par deux moteur à courant continu. Les moteurs ont été dimensionnés pour permettre à l’hélicoptère de voler. Il a été décidé au début du projet de ne pas utiliser de microcontrôleur. L’électronique sera donc purement analogique. Nous avons choisi de créer notre propre télécommande. La télécommande sera un boîtier en plastique sur lequel un joystick et un potentiomètre linéaire seront fixés. Le boîter contiendra le PCB de l’émetteur et la pile.

This dissertation seeks to bring material experimentation to the forefront of design by associating it with computation and fabrication technologies that challenge the current disciplines of digital fabrication in architecture. The idea of transient materialisation is not primarily interested in the representation of digital geometry; rather, it considers the process of morphogenesis that emerges when multiple factors, such as geometric data, differentiated material states, machine capacity, fabrication timing and environmental stimuli, influence and construct within each other. Because this process is an intricate correlation, feedback analysis serves as a design medium in which to explore new forms of architecture through numerous digital and physical experiments. In addition, transient materialisation not only advocates for embracing indeterminate material effects for further investigation of material aesthetics it also challenges both the perception and sensoriality of architecture. Hence, to examine this research direction, this thesis conducts a set of experimental projects through hands-on material experiments as well as the development of software and prototyping machines. Collectively, the dissertation proposes a framework for the discussion of transient materialisation across three dimensions (ephemerality, dematerialisation and coagulation) through these experiments.
