This lecture introduces chemical thermodynamics, focusing on state functions and enthalpy. State functions describe a system's state independently of its path. Enthalpy is the sum of internal energy and pressure-volume work. The first law states that internal energy change equals heat and work exchanged. Different types of systems, standard state conditions, and enthalpy of state changes are discussed. Hess's Law and methods to calculate reaction enthalpies using bond enthalpies or heats of formation are explained. The lecture also covers spontaneous processes, limitations of the first law of thermodynamics, and the concept of entropy.
