This lecture explores the Self-Determination theory as an explanation for the relationship between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, discussing the impact of rewards on free choice of tasks and effective verbal rewards/feedback. Evidence from various studies is presented, including a meta-analysis of 128 studies on extrinsic rewards and intrinsic motivation in education. The long-term effects of incentives on post-reward task engagement are also examined, highlighting the potential short-lived negative impact. Additionally, the lecture delves into the role of competence-focused rewards in enhancing intrinsic motivation and the importance of feedback at different levels, emphasizing the significance of clarifying goals and learning intentions.
