Lecture
This lecture covers the description of electromagnetic waves, including the wave equations derived by Maxwell, the electromagnetic spectrum, and the propagation of transverse electric and magnetic disturbances at the speed of light. It also explains the mathematical representation of plane waves in 3D, the Poynting vector for energy transport, and radiation pressure. The electromagnetic spectrum, spanning over 15 orders of magnitude, is discussed in detail. Additionally, the conservation of energy relevant to electromagnetic waves and the intensity of waves through the time-averaged Poynting vector are explored. The lecture concludes with the momentum of electromagnetic waves and the concept of radiation pressure for momentum transfer during absorption and reflection.
