Primary Stability in Cementless THA

This lecture discusses the importance of primary stability in cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) to prevent aseptic loosening, which is a common cause of revision surgeries. It covers the factors contributing to aseptic loosening, such as micromotions at the bone-implant interface, as well as the impact of different design philosophies on implant stability. The presentation includes data from the Australian Joint Registry on reasons for revision in primary hip replacements. Various studies on bone ingrowth, micromotion thresholds, and the effects of mechanical stimulation on osseointegration are also reviewed.
