This lecture covers the relationship between wave speed and arterial compliance, explaining how wave speed is related to arterial properties, such as compliance and elasticity. It discusses the wave transmission and reflection phenomena in arteries, including the characteristic impedance and wave reflections at bifurcations. The instructor presents methods to derive the characteristic impedance and demonstrates how to estimate aortic pulse pressure from cardiac output. Additionally, the lecture explores pulse wave velocity (PWV) and its relation to pressure and age, providing insights into wave propagation with and without attenuation, as well as the augmentation index and wave reflections due to peripheral occlusion.
