Increasing the capability of automated driving vehicles is motivated by environmental, productivity, and traffic safety benefits. But over-reliance on the automation system is known to cause accidents. The role of the driver cannot be underestimated as it will ultimately be the most relevant aspect for trust building and social acceptance of this technology. Here we introduce a driver-oriented automation strategy to achieve collaborative steering. Our approach relies on three major functionalities: interaction, arbitration, and inclusion. The proposed control strategy is grounded in the concept of shared control enabling driver intervention over the automation without deactivation. Well-defined physical human-robot interaction types are made available with the arbitration strategy. The automated driving trajectory is adapted to include the driver intent into the tactical level of trajectory planning. This enables driver initiated rerouting and consistent coordination of all vehicle actuators. In this way, automated vehicles, which rely on sight only, are augmented with the incorporation of the driver intent. The driver is neither replaced by nor excluded from the automation, rather their role remains active to the benefit of trust building and driving safety.

Cogno-Vest: A Torso-Worn, Force Display to Experimentally Induce Specific Hallucinations and Related Bodily Sensations

Recent advances in virtual reality and robotic technologies have allowed researchers to explore the mechanisms underlying bodily aspects of self-consciousness which are largely attributed to the multisensory and sensorimotor processing of bodily signals (bodily self-consciousness, BSC). One key contribution to BSC, that is currently poorly addressed due to the lack of a wearable solution, concerns realistic collision sensations on the torso. Here, we introduce and validate a proof-of-concept prototype of torso-worn force display, the Cogno-vest, that provides mechanical touch on the user s back in a sensorimotor perception experiment. In a first empirical study, we characterized human finger poking (N=28). In order to match these poking characteristics and meet the wearability criteria, we used bi-directional, push-pull solenoids as a force actuator in the Cogno-vest. Subsequently, and based on an iterative design procedure, a body-conforming, unisex, torso-worn force display was prototyped. Finally, we conducted a behavioral study that investigated BSC in 25 healthy participants by introducing conflicting sensorimotor signals between their hand and torso (back). Using the final reiteration of the Cogno-vest we successfully replicated previous findings on illusory states of BSC, characterized by presence hallucinations (PH) and passivity symptoms, and achieved higher illusion ratings compared to static conditions used in prior studies.

Principles and Test Result of Novel Full Passive Magnetic Levitation Motor with Diamagnetic Disk

This paper proposes a novel full passive magnetic levitation motor without active magnetic suspension. It has a magnetic levitation unit and a motor unit. The Halbach array permanent magnets and a pyrolytic graphite (PG) disk realize the full passive magnetic levitation. The rotational motor torque is generated by a coreless motor. The axial and radial stable forces are calculated by the diamagnetic equation based with magnetic field distribution given by the 3-D FEM analysis. In experiment, the static levitation force and axial vibrations are measured and speed control test is conducted as high as 4000 r/min.
