Claudio Bruschini

Claudio Bruschini holds an MSc in high energy physics from the University of Genova and a PhD in Applied Sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). He started his career with INFN (Italy, 1993), in the WA92 CERN collaboration (particle physics), and then moved to CERN as a Fellow in the European GP-MIMD2 project, attached to the NA48 collaboration (particle physics, parallel programming, 1994-1995). He then started his close collaboration with EPFL, first in the DeTeC (Demining Technology Center) project (sensors for landmine detection/humanitarian demining, 1996-1997). After DeTeC's end, he started the first of a series of fruitful collaborations with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) on humanitarian demining related R&D (1998). This was followed by the EUDEM survey project (The European Union in Humanitarian Demining, 1998), the EUDEM2 three year EC sponsored support measure (www.eudem.info, 2001-2004), and the DELVE support action (www.delve.vub.ac.be, 2007). In parallel he started working within the EPFL's AQUA group (Advanced Quantum Architectures, Edoardo Charbon), on topics as diverse as ultrasonic sensors for in-air application, optical 3D and high speed 2D sensing, sensor networks, or tracking/motion capture systems, in particular for the preparation of research projects. This culminated in the European MEGAFRAME (www.megaframe.eu, FP6, 2006-2010, SPAD arrays and related in-pixel time stamping electronics in deep submicron CMOS technology) and SPADnet (www.spadnet.eu, FP7, 2010-2014, networked SPAD arrays for Positron Emission Tomography) projects, coordinated by EPFL-AQUA. As from 2009 he also worked with Dario Floreano on the management of the CURVACE Curved Artificial Compound Eyes FP7 project (www.curvace.org), coordinated by EPFL-LIS. He was also active with CHUV (Lausanne University Hospital) within EndoTOFPET-US (endoscopic PET) as well as on a CTI project devoted to the development of a new hand-held standalone tool for tracer-guided medical procedures. In 2014 he had also the pleasure of joining the EPFL ICLAB of Christian Enz during its ramp-up phase, collaborating on device related topics (SNF GigaRadMOST) and biomedical R&D (NanoTera WiseSkin). Claudio is now fully with EPFL’s Advanced Quantum Architecture (AQUA). He has also been active as independent scientific consultant, under the label CBR Scientific Consulting, on the preparation of (European) R&D project proposals and the execution of individual studies, and worked in 2006 for a local start-up as operations manager and R&D advisor.... but this is another story. Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) is a promising noninvasive technique for monitoring cerebral blood flow and measuring cortex functional activation tasks. Taking multiple parallel measurements has been shown to increase sensitivity, but is not easily scalable with discrete optical detectors. Here we show that with a large 500 × 500 SPAD array and an advanced FPGA design, we achieve an SNR gain of almost 500 over single-pixel mDCS performance. The system can also be reconfigured to sacrifice SNR to decrease correlation bin width, with 400 ns resolution being demonstrated over 8000 pixels.

This paper presents a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) in 55 nm bipolar-CMOSDMOS (BCD) technology. In order to realize a SPAD having sub-20 V breakdown voltage for mobile applications while preventing high tunneling noise, a high-voltage N-well available in BCD is utilized to implement the avalanche multiplication region. The resulting SPAD has a breakdown voltage of 18.4 V while achieving an excellent dark count rate of 4.4 cps/mu m2 at the excess bias voltage of 7 V in spite of the advanced technology node. At the same time, the device achieves a high peak photon detection probability (PDP) of 70.1% at 450 nm thanks to the high and uniform E-field. Its PDP values at 850 and 940 nm, wavelengths of interest for 3D ranging applications reach 7.2 and 3.1%, respectively, with the use of deep N-well. The timing jitter of the SPAD, full width at half maximum (FWHM), is 91 ps at 850 nm. It is expected that the presented SPAD enables cost-effective time-of-flight and LiDAR sensors with the advanced standard technology for many mobile applications.

A 500 x 500 Dual-Gate SPAD Imager With 100% Temporal Aperture and 1 ns Minimum Gate Length for FLIM and Phasor Imaging Applications

In this article, we report on SwissSPAD3 (SS3), a 500 x 500 pixel single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array, fabricated in 0.18-mu m CMOS technology. In this sensor, we introduce a novel dual-gate architecture with two contiguous temporal windows, or gates, guaranteed by the circuit architecture to be nonoverlapping and covering the totality of the sensor's exposure period. The gates can be adjusted with a temporal resolution of 17.9 ps, and the minimum measured gate width is 0.99 ns; to our knowledge, the shortest reported to date among large-format SPAD imagers. In the dual-channel mode, the burst frame rate is 49.8 and 97.7 kframes/s in the single-channel mode. A 2690-MB/s PCI express (PCIe) interface has been added to the data acquisition framework, enabling continuous operation at approximately 44 and 88 kframes/s. Due to optimizations of the gate-signal tree, we achieved a significant reduction to gate skew and gate width variation, which is negligible with respect to the SPAD temporal jitter. These improvements, along with sub-10-cps dark count rate (DCR) per pixel and 50% maximum photon detection probability (PDP), result in a sensor particularly well suited for fast acquisition fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) experiments, for which we demonstrate reduced dispersion versus a single-gated sensor.
