Electromagnetic field associated with lightning return strokes to a tall structure: influence of channel geometry

The paper is a contribution to the studies of factors that can affect electric (E) and magnetic (H) fields associated with lightning return strokes to tall structure. Herein, the influence of lightning channel inclination upon vertical E-field and azimuthal H-field is analyzed. Input parameters of the simulation (injected current, properties of the tower and of the channel, etc.) are derived from experimental observations. Current distribution is calculated adopting a one-section transmission line model (1TL). For a few characteristic cases of non-vertical channel orientation, E- and H-fields produced at 2 km distance by a lightning strike to the CN tower (546-m height) are computed, and compared to those of the vertical-channel case ("A"). For considered conditions, E-field first peak values differ from the basic case "A" by +9 to - 22 %, while at late-time period (within 10 μs) E-values can differ by +152 to -75 %. For H-field, corresponding deviations are smaller: +7 to -16 % and +87 to -61 %

Lightning Electromagnetic Fields at Very Close Distances Associated with Lightning Strikes to the Gaisberg Tower

In this paper we present and discuss measurements of electric (vertical and radial) and magnetic fields from leaders and return strokes associated with lightning strikes to the 100 m tall Gaisberg tower in Austria obtained in 2007 and 2008. The fields were measured at a distance of about 20 m from the tower. Simultaneously, return stroke currents were also measured at the top of the tower. The data include, for the first time at such close distances, simultaneous records of vertical and horizontal electric fields. The vertical electric field waveforms appeared as asymmetrical V-shaped pulses. The initial, relatively slow, negative electric field change is due to the downward leader, and the following, fast, positive electric field change is due to the upward return stroke phase of the lightning discharge. The horizontal (radial) electric field due to the leader phase has a waveshape similar to that of the vertical electric field. However, the horizontal field due to the return stroke is characterized by a short negative pulse of the order of 1 mu s or so, starting with a fast negative excursion followed by a positive one. The return stroke vertical electric field changes appear to be significantly smaller than similar measurements obtained using triggered lightning. This finding confirms the shadowing effect of the tower, which results in a significant decrease of the electric field at distances of about the height of the tower or less. The vertical and horizontal E field changes due to the return stroke were also found to be larger on average than the leader electric field changes. In a significant number of cases (33%), the vertical electric field waveforms due to the return stroke were characterized by a first peak exceeding the typical late-time flattening due to the electrostatic term. This is in contrast with similar measurements related to triggered lightning which do not exhibit such a first peak. About one quarter of the measured vertical electric field waveforms (18 pulses out of 76) featured an unusual waveform characterized by a positive leader field change followed by a bipolar return stroke field change with a zero crossing time of about 60 mu s.

Far-field-current relationship based on the TL model for lightning return strokes to elevated strike objects

New general expressions relating lightning return stroke currents and far radiated electric and magnetic fields are proposed, taking into account the effect of an elevated strike object, whose presence is included as an extension to the transmission line (TL) model. Specific equations are derived for the case of tall and electrically short objects. The derived expressions show that, for tall structures (when the round-trip propagation time from top to bottom within the tower is greater than the current zero-to-peak risetime), the far field is enhanced through a factor with respect to an ideal return stroke initiated at ground level. The enhancement factor can be expressed in terms of the return stroke wavefront speed v, the speed of light in vacuum c, and the current reflection coefficient at the top of the elevated strike object. For typically negative values of this top reflection coefficient, lightning strikes to tall towers result in a significant enhancement of the far electromagnetic field. Expressions relating the far electromagnetic field and the return stroke current are also presented for electrically short towers and for very long return stroke current wavefronts. For the case of return strokes initiated at ground level (h=0), these expressions represent a generalization of the classical TL model, in which the reflections at the ground are now taken into account. We describe also simultaneous measurements of return stroke current and its associated electric and magnetic fields at two distances related with lightning strikes to the 553-m-high Toronto Canadian National (CN) Tower performed during 2000 and 2001. The derived expressions for tall strike objects are tested versus obtained sets of simultaneously measured currents and fields associated with lightning strikes to the CN Tower, and a reasonable agreement is found. Additionally, it is shown that the peak of the electromagnetic field radiated by a lightning strike to a 553-m-high structure is relatively insensitive to the value of the return stroke velocity, in contrast to the lightning strikes to ground

Numerical modelling of high temperature superconducting tapes and cables

This Ph.D. thesis is focused on the numerical modelling of high-Tc superconductors (HTS) at the operating temperature of 77 K (liquid nitrogen). The purpose of numerical modelling is to precisely calculate the current and field distributions inside HTS devices (tapes, cables) and the corresponding AC losses, which are one of the most important limiting factors for a large-scale application of such materials. From the electrical point of view, superconductors are characterized by a strongly non-linear voltage-current relation, which defines the transition from superconducting to normal state. In the case of HTS, the steepness of this transition is smoother than for low-Tc superconductors (LTS), so that the commonly used critical state model (CSM) gives a too simplified representation of their electromagnetic behaviour and can be used for a qualitative description only. In this thesis the finite element method (FEM) has been used for precisely computing the current and field distributions as well as for evaluating the AC losses in HTS devices. The superconducting transition is modelled with a power-law relation, E(J) = Ec(J/Jc)n, which is derived from the fit of transport measurements. Firstly, the results obtained with the software package FLUX3D on multi-filamentary tapes have been validated by means of a comparison with the ones obtained by another software package (FLUX2D). The results from FLUX2D, having already been successfully compared with experimental measurements within the framework of two previous Ph.D. theses at LANOS, have been used as reference. Secondly, two power-law models, which take into account the spatial variation of the critical current density inside HTS tapes and its strongly anisotropic dependence on the magnetic field, have been implemented in FLUX3D. In most cases, this latter dependence is extremely important, since the transport capacity of the superconductor is considerably reduced (and its power loss sensibly increased) by the presence of a magnetic field. Afterwards, FEM modelling of HTS tapes has been extended to cables. HTS cables are in general composed by different layers of several tapes and have a quite complex three-dimensional structure: in fact, the layers are wound around a central cylindrical support with different pitch lengths and relative winding orientations, in order to obtain a uniform repartition of the transport current among the layers, which minimizes the total AC losses. For overcoming the difficulties of a direct 3D FEM simulation, a simple electrical model, which allows to find the optimal pitch lengths and whose results are the input data for a 2D FEM evaluation of the AC losses, has been developed. FEM computations have also been used to investigate the influence of the non-uniformity of the tape properties (contact resistance, critical current, power index) on the global loss performance of a single-layer HTS cable. As an alternative to FEM computations, an equivalent circuit model of HTS cables has been utilized. It describes the cable from the macroscopic point of view and allows to compute the current repartition among the layers and the corresponding AC losses, without the necessity of having detailed information about individual tapes. In the framework of the European project BIG-POWA, I have collaborated to the assembling process of a HTS power-link at the Pirelli Labs, in the Milan region, Italy. Finally, 3D simulations have been performed to extensively study the coupling effect between two superconducting filaments via the resistive matrix, which is a typical case where analytical solutions exist for very peculiar geometries and physical conditions only. FEM simulations have been utilized to study the dependence of the filament coupling on the physical and geometrical parameters of the conductors.
