One of the most important research efforts developed to date is the European Project ELLPAG (European Long-Life Pavement Group). It was founded, in 2002, as a FEHRL group to gather the European knowledge. The group has been active since then, and it has been focused on flexible, semi-rigid and rigid pavements. The advantages of this type of pavements can be very significant, either in terms of economy, serviceability or environment. However, important research needs are still required as pointed out by ELLPAG; to investigate the deterioration mechanisms of long-life pavements, to develop improved techniques for estimating residual life of pavements, or to develop an optimum strategy for managing surface distresses, are some examples
