LiZnNb4O11.5: A novel oxygen deficient compound in the Nb-rich part of the Li2O–ZnO–Nb2O5 system

A novel lithium zinc niobium oxide LiZnNb4O11.5 (LZNO) has been found in the Nb-rich part of Li2O–ZnO–Nb2O5 system. LZNO, with an original a-PbO2 related structure, has been synthesized by the routine ceramic technique and characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Reflections belonging to the LZNO phase, observed in X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and electron diffraction, have been indexed as monoclinic with unit cell parameters a=17.8358(9) A˚ , b=15.2924(7) A˚ , c=5.0363(3)A˚ and g=96.607(5)1 or as a-PbO2-like with lattice constants a=4.72420(3) A˚ , b=5.72780(3) A˚ , c=5.03320(3) A˚ , g=90.048(16)1 and modulation vector q=0.3a*+1.1b* indicating a commensurately modulated a-PbO2 related structure. The monoclinic cell is a supercell related to the latter. Using synchrotron powder diffraction data, the structure has been solved and refined as a commensurate modulation (superspace group P1121/n(ab0)00) as well as a supercell (space group P21/b). The superspace description allows us to consider the LZNO structure as a member of the proposed a-PbO2-Z (3+1)D structure type, which unifies both incommensurately and commensurately modulated structures. HRTEM reveals several types of defects in LZNO and structural models for these defects are proposed. Two new phases in Li2O–ZnO–Nb2O5 system are predicted on the basis of this detailed HRTEM analysis.

Structure of the Orthorhombic gamma-Phase and Phase Transitions of Ca(BD4)(2)

We have solved and refined the crystal structure of the orthorhombic gamma-phase of Ca(BD4)(2) by combined synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, and ab initio calculations. Among five structural candidates giving the same quality of the fit of the diffraction data, the structural model with the highest symmetry and space group Pbca is the most appropriate. This is supported by the implicit presence of the Pbca symmetry operations in the low-symmetry space groups in both experimental and DFT calculated structures. The Ca atoms are surrounded by six BD4 groups that have similar distortions as reported for the beta-phase of Ca(BD4)(2). On the basis of the experimental structures, free energies of the alpha-, beta-, and gamma-phases are calculated in the range 300 K < T < 620 K. The phase transitions are observed in the same temperature range by means of X-ray diffraction on Ca(BD4)(2) + MgD2 and pure Ca(BD4)(2) samples. According to the ab initio calculations, the alpha-phase is the ground state at 0 K. At room temperature, the calculated free energies of the alpha-phase, beta-phase, and gamma-phase were found to be within similar to 0.13 eV/f.u., in agreement with the observed coexistence of these phases. Moreover, calculations provide insight into trends for relative stabilities of alpha-, beta-, and gamma-phases. That is, with increasing temperature, the beta-phase becomes more stable, while the metastable gamma-phase becomes more destabilized with respect to the alpha-phase.

Metergoline is a dopamine agonist and serotonin antagonist used both in human and veterinary medicine. In addition to the previously known crystalline form, a new polymorph, which crystallizes from aqueous solution, was found. Since it was initially impossible to prepare a single crystal of quality suitable for single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements using a conventional laboratory source, the structure was solved from the powder diffraction data using synchrotron radiation. The structure determination also included solving the effects of preferred orientation. Characterization was simultaneously done by solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Finally, a small single crystal suitable for synchrotron diffraction was found after numerous tries. Crystal structure determination using this single crystal confirmed the powder-based solution. Comparison of information obtained by different experimental methods (powder diffraction, ssNMR, single crystal diffraction) was made.

Modulated structure of La2Co1.7 from neutron and X-ray diffraction data

An La2Co1.7 crystal was investigated by single-crystal neutron and X-ray diffraction. The neutron measurement was performed with a Laue white-beam technique at 15 K and room temperature, using a large position-sensitive detector. The X-ray measurements were obtained at room temperature from a CCD detector. The average structure of La2Co1.7 is hexagonal with cell parameters a = 4.885 (1), c = 4.273 (2) Angstrom and space group P6(3)/mmc. The satellites are located at the vertices of small hexagons perpendicular to the c axis. The modulated crystal was indexed assuming a sixfold twinned 3 + 1 dimensional structure with q = (alpha, 0, gamma). The structure was solved in the pseudoorthorhombic cell, with a = 8.461 (1), b = 4.885 (1), c = 4.273 (2) Angstrom, in the superspace group C2/m(alpha, 0, gamma). Owing to space requirements, the Co atoms cannot rt precisely into the octahedral sites of the La h.c.p. (hexagonal close packing). Instead, the Co atoms adopt a different periodicity, which is not commensurate with the periodicity of the La atoms. Two structure models have been refined in order to describe this behaviour, one using the sawtooth function for the positional modulation of cobalt and the other describing the structure as a composite system. The chemical composition calculated from the composite model is La2Co1.8(1) with the estimated standard deviation arising from the variation of q for different samples. In both models lanthanum is incommensurately modulated, while the position of cobalt seems not to be affected by any relative periodic displacement. [References: 13] 13
