Preparation of homogeneous titania coatings on the surface of MWNTs

The aim of this work was to develop a controllable route to produce a stable and inorganic layer on the surface of multi-wall carbon nanotubes. Precursor compounds such as TiBr4, TiCl4, Ti(OiPr)(4), and Ti(OEt)(4) were used to cover the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under either solvent free or solution conditions. Various titania precursors were compared in the formation of homogeneous layers on the surface of CNTs. As-prepared titania coverages were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution TEM, scanning electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and Xray diffraction techniques. Carbon nanotubes with unique physical and mechanical properties have shown great potential for biological applications, including tissue engineering and mimicking the structure and properties of human bones. In the present work, sol-gel synthesized nanocomposite powder of multi-wall carbon nanotube/hydroxyapatite characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy and thermal analyses. The results show homogenous dispersion of nanotube in well-crystallized hydroxyapatite ceramic matrix. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscope observations show the sodium dodecyl sulfate-adsorbed multi-wall nanotube almost wrapped completely by crystals of hydroxyapatite that will help better integration of bone substitute materials with the surrounding bone tissue. Eventually, invitro study confirms the biocompatibility of composite powder comparable to monolithic hydroxyapatite.

Waveguide modes spatially resolved by low-loss STEM-EELS

In an era of new developments in nanomaterials analysis enabled by the unprecedented spatial and energy resolutions of electron energy-loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM-EELS), it remains that the vast majority of works concern collective or single-particle excitations that are well described by the electrostatic approximation, which neglects retardation and magnetic field effects. Here we demonstrate a simple case in which that approximation is fundamentally inadequate. When the beam energy is above the Cherenkov threshold and the geometric dimensions of the nanomaterial sample are on the order of the wavelength of light in the material, spatial variations in low-loss (less than or similar to 5 eV) spectral maps from guided light modes may be observed. We demonstrate such observations for amorphous silicon disks and offer an interpretation of the results based on the waveguide modes of a cylinder. We also demonstrate explicitly that spatial variations from waveguide modes are manifest in analytic models for the especially simple geometry of a STEM beam penetrating a dielectric ribbon. We discuss how these modes relate to those that have been observed more generally in dielectric nanomaterials.

Magnetic circular dichroism in electron microscopy

Although the analogies between the electron energy loss spectra and X-ray absorption spectra were recognized long ago, the possibility to observe the magnetic circular dichroism in the electron microscope was demonstrated only recently. This technique combines the atom specificity with the high spatial resolution of the transmission electron microscope. Being a very young technique, there are still many open questions concerning the optimization of the signal to noise ratio. In this paper we study the dichroic signal dependence on the sample thickness, acceleration voltage and incoming beam tilt angle of bcc-Fe and fcc-Ni.
