Organic molecules as mediators and catalysts for photocatalytic and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction

Reduction of CO2 by electrochemical and photoelectrochemical methods to produce carbon-rich fuels is a heavily pursued research theme. Most of the current efforts are focused on the development of transition-metal-based catalysts. In this tutorial review, we present an overview of the development of organic molecules as mediators and catalysts for CO2 reduction. Four classes of organic molecules are discussed: tetraalkylammonium salts, aromatic esters and nitriles, ionic liquids, and pyridinium derivatives. It is shown that reactions mediated or catalyzed by these organic molecules can be competitive compared to their metal-catalyzed counterparts, both in terms of product selectivity and energy efficiency.

Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 Catalyzed by Metal Oxides

A rapidly growing population and industrialization have caused the exploitation of natural resources in keeping with fossil fuels shortage. Due to the combustion of fossil fuels, the concentration of CO2 in the earth's atmosphere, which is a potent greenhouse gas, has been increasing dramatically and contributes to the current climate change. Meanwhile, CO2 can be considered as an abundant and inexpensive carbon feedstock, especially if carbon sequestration is required for future fossil fuel-based power stations. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to form useful chemicals or fuels is a potentially efficient method of CO2 utilization and recycling. The advantage of the electrochemical CO2 reduction is that natural renewable sources, like solar power, wind power, hydropower or nuclear power can supply electric power for CO2 conversion. Various products, such as carbon monoxide, oxalic acid, formic acid, alcohols and hydrocarbons have been reduced from CO2 First in chapter 1, the general remarks about electrochemical reduction of CO2, especially on metal electrodes are introduced. It also includes the introduction of photoelectochemical CO2 reduction and literature review study about electrocatalytic CO2 reduction with organic molecules as mediators and catalysts. In chapter 2, our interest in Mo-based electrocatalysts led us to study the activity of MoO2 for CO2 reduction. MoO2 microparticles indeed act as an active catalyst for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 in organic solvents such as acetonitrile (MeCN) and dimethylformamide (DMF). In the context of this study, it was found that the CO2 reduction activity is much higher at -20 oC than at RT, and it can be promoted by a small amount of water. The selectivity of CO2 reduction depends on the temperature, overpotential and water concentration. Chapter 3 describes the electrochemical reduction of CO2, improved and modified by using imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) as an electrolyte in organic solvent with MoO2/Pb electrode. The important role of ILs in changing the pathway of the reduction was observed. Particularly, the use of imidazolium ILs instead of tetraalkylammonium salt as an electrolyte altered the product from oxalate to CO. Besides, the overpotential of the CO2 reduction was shifted to the less negative potentials compared to previous work, and the current density as well increased. At a low water concentration, the catalytic activity was promoted and the total Faradaic efficiency (FE) was up to 100% with more than 60% of CO formation. Furthermore, imidazolium ILs together with our MoO2/Pb electrode lowered the overpotential of CO2 reduction by about 40 mV. In addition to the high selectivity for CO formation, the imidazolium ILs can perform a role as co-catalyst for lowering the CO2 reduction potential. Finally, chapter 4 shows the possibility of photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction to extend our research with various catalysts. In this work, we could derive a photoelectrochemical method to deposit Sn/SnOx catalyst on the surface protected cuprous oxide (Cu2O) photocathodes. The deposition of Sn/SnOx catalyst was optimized on the photocathode and it exhibited reliable CO2 reduction activity in a mild aqueous condition. Sn/SnOx-Cu2O photocathode showed the onset potential of the photocurrent at +0.1 V vs. RHE, which is very promising result. At a constant potential electrolysis of -0.1 V vs. RHE, a FE of 50% for formate formation was obtained and the total FE was around 86%.

Synthetic methodologies for C-C and C-N bond formation involving alkyl radicals

C-C and C-N bonds are some of the most common structures in molecules ranging from drugs to catalysts and to food additives. Many coupling reactions were developed to form these types of bonds with excellent selectivity and good performance. Still, the synthesis of some of those species either depends on traditional methods or requires expensive and rare reagents and catalysts. The use of precious metals in chemistry, and particularly in the industry, can make molecular synthesis expensive and energy-intensive since the extraction of those materials is costly. Moreover, in homogeneous catalysis, the recovery of metal-based catalysts is almost impossible, making these processes unsustainable for the future. Thus, the discovery of chemical reactions that donât involve precious materials is indispensable. This thesis concentrates on the development of two chemical transformations, one performing an sp2-sp3 radical reductive coupling, one performing a photocatalyzed alkyl amination, involving inexpensive reagents and catalysts. The first chapter reviews the existing methodologies which use alkyl radicals to form carbon-carbon and carbon-nitrogen bonds. Alkyl radicals are formed from alkyl halides and pseudo-halides (Acids, esters, tosylates, etc.) via oxidation or reduction performed by metal or photoredox catalyst. The wide variety of available methodologies was illustrated, highlighting the advantages and weaknesses of each reaction. The second chapter of this dissertation is devoted to the development of a new iron-based catalytic method to form stereoselectively Z-alkene boron species from the corresponding boron-alkyne. This novel stereoselective method opens a new way to obtain these types of molecules with cheap reagents, in high yields, with excellent stereoselectivity (Z:E ratio >10:1), and with good tolerance of functional group. The reaction is radical based, avoiding the problem of beta-hydride elimination, which usually occurs in ionic reactions involving metal centers. In order to prove the versatility of this method, the vinyl boron compound formed from this reaction was used for further functionalizations. The formal total synthesis of a 5-HT2c receptor agonist was successfully performed, improving the overall yield of the process, and avoiding the use of expensive and polluting chemicals. The third chapter of this thesis is concentrated on the development of a tandem photoredox/metal base catalyzed functionalization of anilines and imines with alkyl carboxylic esters. In this reaction, no late transition metal is used, and the traditional metal-based photocatalyst is substituted with an inexpensive and more efficient organic dye. The alkylation of amines is a challenging topic in organic chemistry and classical nucleophilic substitution lacks selectivity and scope. Harvesting visible light with a photoredox catalyst opens the possibility to a radical pathway, making this coupling easy and with high tolerance for functional groups. In order to understand the catalytic cycle of the reaction, additional mechanistic studies were conducted, leading to some insight on how this reaction works.

Decreasing the Stability of Borohydride with Ionic Liquids for Hydrogen Storage and Carbon Dioxide Conversion

The world needs to move from a fossil fuel to a renewable energy based society. With the increasing electricity production from wind and PV, short and long term energy storage are becoming one of challenge of the 21st century. While batteries are the preferred method for short term storage, another technology is required for seasonal storage. Hydrogen is a valuable energy carrier owning its high energy density (122 kJ/g). However, compact and safe storage of H2 is challenging. The current solution is to compress hydrogen up to 700 bar for mobile application (fuel cell cars), and metal hydrides for stationary application. Material-based H2 storage avoids using high-pressure cylinder. Complex hydrides are especially attractive for solid-state H2 storage due to their high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen density. Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) contains 10.6 mass% of H2, but high temperatures are needed to release H2 (505 Â°C) and the reaction is not reversible under moderate conditions. To apply complex hydrides in real applications, they must be modified to improve the kinetics and thermodynamics of H2 desorption. Several possibilities exist such as confinement into scaffolds, catalyst addition, or combination of several hydrides to modify the dehydrogenation pathway. The stability of complex hydrides is determined by the localization of the charge on the central atom of the complex. Therefore, in this thesis the interaction of highly polar or ionic compounds with complex hydrides were investigated. We combine NaBH4 with a special class of organic salts: ionic liquids (IL). Considering their chemical and thermal stability, IL are attractive additive. Using organic additives instead of expensive metal catalysts is another advantage. Two different techniques were employed to combine the IL and NaBH4. The first one consists of mechanochemically milling them to create an interaction between BH4- and IL. The second one is to directly synthesized IL borohydrides ([IL][BH4]) by metathesis reaction. Different ILs, such as vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride ([VBTMA][Cl]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim][Cl]), and 1-ethyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bromide ([EMPY][Br]) were tested. [bmim][BH4] was able to release H2 below 100 Â°C. The hydrogen content ranges between 2.4 mass% and 2.9 mass%. The second challenge of this century is the CO2 problematic. Atmospheric CO2 concentration linearly increases, leading to greenhouse effect. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and utilization (CCU) are primordial research topic to stabilize the CO2 emission. Hydrides are primary reducing agents, thus reduction of CO2 can be accomplished with them. Direct CO2 reduction at ambient conditions is challenging for classical borohydrides. With our [IL][BH4], gaseous CO2 can be captured and reduced under ambient conditions (1 bar, RT). Three CO2 bounds with boron to give triformatoborohydride ([HB(OCHO)3]â. Dilute CO2 (6 vol%) can be used as well. The reaction was followed in real time with a magnetic suspended balance (MSB). Further, CO2 reduction happened when air is used as a carbon dioxide source. Formic acid can be obtained by adding HCl. Thus, ionic liquid borohydrides have great potential as a CO2 absorber and reducer to alternative fuels. In short, we applied ionic liquid to destabilized borohydrides. The resulting materials exhibited potential for solid-state hydrogen storage, as well as CO2 capture and transformation.
