Thermocouple Thermal Inertia Effects on Impingement Heat Transfer Experiments Using the Transient Liquid Crystal Technique

The transient liquid crystal technique is widely used for impingement heat transfer experiments. Additionally, due to the difficulty of producing pure temperature steps in the flow, many authors assumed the fluid temperature evolution as a series of step changes using Duhamel’s superposition theorem. However, for small impingement configurations where the jets are fed from the same plenum chamber, and hence flow velocities are relatively small, thermal inertia of commercial thermocouples causes a delay, lagging from the real plenum temperature history. This paper investigates thermal inertia characteristics of thermocouples and their effect on the calculation of impingement heat transfer coefficient. Several thermocouples with exposed junction and different wire diameter were considered over a range of plenum flow conditions typically found in impingement heat transfer experiments. The effect of thermocouple time constant on the evaluation of the heat transfer rate was investigated in a narrow channel consisting of five inline impingement jets. The results indicated a significant effect of thermocouple response on the stagnation point region heat transfer, while lower local heat transfer rates are negligibly affected as liquid crystal signals appear later in time and the driving gas temperature history has a smaller influence on the evaluated data.

Numerical Modeling of Annular Laminar Film Condensation in Circular and Non-Circular Micro-Channels under Normal and Micro-Gravity

A theoretical and numerical model to predict film condensation heat transfer in mini, micro and ultra micro-channels of different internal shapes is presented in this thesis. The model is based on a finite volume formulation of the Navier-Stokes and energy equations and it includes the contributions of the unsteady terms, surface tension, axial shear stresses, gravitational forces and wall thermal conduction. Notably, interphase mass transfer and near-to-wall effects (disjoining pressure) are also included. This model has been validated versus various benchmark cases and versus published experimental results from three different laboratories, predicting micro-channel heat transfer data with an average error of 20 % or better. The conjugate heat transfer problem arising from the coupling between the thin film fluid dynamics, the heat transfer in the condensing fluid and the heat conduction in the channel wall has been studied and analyzed. The work has focused on the effects of three external wall boundary conditions: a uniform wall temperature, a non uniform wall heat flux and single-phase convective cooling. The thermal axial and peripheral conduction occurring in the wall of the channel can affect the behavior of the condensate film, not only because it redistributes the heat, but also because the annular laminar film condensation process is dependent on the local saturation to wall temperature difference. When moving from mini to micro and ultra-micro channels, the results shows that the axial conduction effects can become very important in the prediction of the wall temperature profile and they can not be ignored. Under these conditions, the overall performances of the heat exchanger become dependent not only on the fluid properties and the operative conditions but also on the geometry and wall material. Results obtained for steady state conditions are presented for circular, elliptical and flattened shape cross sections for R-134a and ammonia, for hydraulic diameters between 10 µm and 3 mm. Microscale condensation finds applications in heat pipes and compact heat exchangers for electronic equipment or spacecraft thermal control, in automotive condensers, in residential air conditioning and in refrigeration applications: the influence of the steady or unsteady gravitational field and of the inertia forces on the flow field and consequently on the heat transfer performances is investigated allowing the model to be applied as a design and optimization tool for enhanced heat exchangers.

Moisture and energy dynamics in fields soils

Soil moisture is crucial to water-cycle as it affects infiltration, runoff and land-atmosphere interactions. In dry soils the role of water vapor fluxes becomes essential and causes a tight coupling between soil moisture dynamics and heat transfer, which makes measurements and modeling extremely difficult. Since advances in both theory and experimental techniques are required, we have focused on both aspects: we have performed theoretical-numerical investigations of soil moisture and energy dynamics at the land surface; tested novel measurements techniques, in laboratory and at field scale, to provide new insights into soil moisture dynamics and contribute to a comprehensive theory of coupled energy and moisture transport. As the dynamics of physical systems are dictated by conservation equations, it is common practice to estimate quantities that cannot be directly measured (e.g. vapor fluxes) from the residuals of balance equations. In laboratory as well as in field experiments, residuals are calculated from measurements that are sparse in space and discrete in time. We have theoretically and numerically shown how the use of discrete data may lead to large residuals even without measurements or model errors. We have demonstrated that residuals are very sensitive to the distance between the measurements and that they increase in presence of nonlinear processes, such as moisture transport. A careful error analysis is required to assess the reliability of residuals computed from discrete data and avoid misinterpretations of the underlying physical processes. Another crucial element dictating soil moisture dynamics and evaporation into the atmosphere is soil water-retention. Popular parametric models of the retention curve present a matric potential that becomes infinite at residual saturation, which is the water content below which liquid flow stops. Few extensions of the water-retention curves have been proposed, which remain rarely used in practice. We have studied the effects of different models on liquid and vapor transport. We have shown that parameterizations that allow vapor flux below residual saturation yield larger vapor fluxes that result in a drier soil surface, whereas deep soil remains relatively wet. When diurnal forcing is considered, potential evaporation is reduced in the energy-limited regime and enhanced in the moisture-limited regime. We have established that in this case extended water-retention models predict larger heat fluxes that might critically impact models at whole scales (possibly including global circulation models). Discrimination between different theoretical descriptions and parametric models requires experiments that monitor moisture and energy dynamics. This demands the use of accurate sensors and measurement techniques that are able to simultaneously monitor several quantities (e.g. soil moisture, temperature, soil thermal properties, solute concentration in soil water). As in general different probes are used, problems arise due to different footprints and sampled soil volumes. Multi functional heat pulse probes (MFHPPs) have been conceived to overcome these issues by allowing simultaneous measurements of all required variables. We have assessed MFHPPs ability to measure ground heat flux, which has to be accurately known to avoid significant imbalances in the surface energy budget. We have employed an experimental setup able to generate a non-uniform heat-flux field and we have demonstrated that MFHPPs can reliably capture the magnitudes and directions of the fluxes. This allows more complete information on ground heat flux than that obtained by the classic probes (e.g. ground heat flux plates). To monitor soil state in large-scale field applications we have investigated the possibility to infer distributed thermal conductivity and soil moisture profiles with an optical fiber. Information is obtained by monitoring soil response to an active heat pulse generated from the metal shield armoring the optic cable, and analyzing the temperature differences of the cooling phase, monitored each meter by a distributed temperature sensing system (DTS). We have shown that soil moisture measurements inferred from soil thermal response (recorded by the DTS) are in good agreement with independent measurements in wet and intermediately wet soils; however in dry soils moisture content is underestimated and further investigations are required to improve this technique for dry conditions. In this study we have significantly improved the knowledge of coupled energy and moisture transport on both theoretical-numerical and experimental sides. We have proven that reliable measurements can be obtained at different spatiotemporal scales, and provided both prognostic and diagnostic methods to optimize their use. Finally, we have suggested crucial improvements to numerical models which might have implications beyond field-soils dynamics.

On the prediction of heat transfer in micro-scale flow boiling

Xu et al. have recently published a set of results for boiling heat transfer measurements in a multi- channel micro- scale evaporator for flow boiling of acetone in triangular cross- section channels ( hydraulic diameter of 155.4 mm). In the present collaboration, we assess our current capability to predict this independent flow boiling data set with a fluid not in the original database and also much smaller in size using the phenomenological three- zone model of Thome, Dupont, and Jacobi. The method models boiling in small diameter channels in the elongated bubble/ slug flow regime. The boiling data falling in this regime are identified here using a new micro- scale flow pattern map proposed by Revellin in order to utilize only test data corresponding to the elongated bubble flow mode. The decrease of the measured wall temperature due to the heat spread by longitudinal conduction through the heat sink was investigated through a finite differences analysis. In addition, a data reduction procedure different than that one used by Xu et al. was used and, consequently, some differences in the heat transfer behavior were found. Based on the present database, a new set of empirical parameters for the three- zone model was proposed. The conjugated effect of flow pattern and bubble/ slug frequency on the heat transfer coefficient was also investigated.
