Generation Process and Analysis of Innovative Timberfabric Vaults

Timberfabric structures, developed at IBOIS, are a new family of timber constructions based on the logic and principles of man-made fabrics. Modular elements called “Timberfabric Modules” are generated by curving and connecting two thin wooden panels. This paper concerns the study of vaults obtained by assembling several “Timberfabric modules” together. A parametric tool is presented which can automatically generate a 3D finite element model of a structure for a given set of initial parameters. This tool assists the architectural design of such structures, providing insights into their geometry as well as into the construction stresses and the kinematic constraints between different constitutive elements

Experimental and numerical study on structural behavior of a single timber textile module

The present work investigates an innovative class of timber structure with potential applications in roofing, facade and bridge construction, called Timberfabric. The development of Timberfabric structures originates from the approach of harnessing the structural, modular and qualities of textiles in timber construction (Weinand and Hudert, 2010) [9]. Timberfabric structures are comprised of repetitive arrangements of one or more structural unit cells called Textile Modules. When properly designed, one obtains a modular and lightweight structure with interesting and unusual geometrical and structural qualities.This paper focuses on the single timber Textile Module. Based on the finite element (FE) method, a reliable procedure is proposed for modeling the overall assembly process of the Textile Module. For comparison, Textile Module prototypes are constructed at two different scales (large and intermediate scales) with different assembly conditions. The proposed geometrically nonlinear FE model allows evaluation of the stresses that are induced during the construction process and which may affect the structural integrity of the module. In particular, the risk of failure during assembly is identified using the anisotropic Tsai-Hill criterion. The structural behavior of the timber Textile Module is then investigated through bending tests using the constructed prototypes. During the loading procedure, the vertical deflections are measured at different locations on the prototype surface by means of external displacement transducers. Using the FE model, the corresponding deformed shapes are simulated by applying the bending loads on the prestressed Textile Module. Experimental displacements and FE predictions are thus compared and found to be in good agreement.

Segmented Spiral using Inter-Connected Timber Elements

This paper describes the design, fabrication, and construction process of a scenography structure representing a five-meter height spiral made out of 3-ply crosslaminated panels. The structure includes 29 timber boxes. Typical through-tenon wood-wood joints are used in parallel to screws. The structure is attached to the main supporting system through multiple cables. A scanning system was applied to facilitate the further measurements. The paper also presents digital workflow of 3D modeling, Finite Element (FE) simulation, fabrication, assembly, and the experimental tests. The principal objective of structural calculation was to understand the load-bearing capacity of the system and the interactions between the timber boxes. The numerical FE model was built in ABAQUSTM to simulate the structural behavior of the spiral. Further details are given about the different steps involved in modelling and fabrication of this structure, such as parametric tools, G-Code tool-path generation for the 5-axis CNC machine, and on site installation. Finally, the loading tests are highlighted to draw possible structural optimization using laser scanning and displacement sensors.

Geometrical description and structural analysis of a modular timber structure

The ambitious goal of the ongoing research at IBOIS, the Laboratory of timber constructions at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is to develop a next generation of timber constructions made out of innovative timber-derived products, through applying textile principles on the building scale. The presented structure is a modular composition of timber folded panels, notably demonstrates an example of applying the geometric techniques used to produce modular patterns and lattices to timber construction context. Effectively, it is shown that complex space structures can be designed using simple connection technology between elements. Moreover, by taking advantage of advanced CAM process, complex planar timber elements are cut in large scale and assembled with high precision as for the prototype of the structure presented in this paper. The folding concept corresponds to a planar reciprocal frame structure. The basic module is consisted of two mutually supporting timber folded panels which are slipped in, consecutively, along their cuts, to build up an arch. The inter-module connection’s stability is provided by contact boundary condition over the slide joints. The fundamental mechanical properties of the structure are examined using Finite Element Method and considering the non-linear contact boundary condition. The static behavior is studied under the self-weight load case as well as the modal dynamic response. According to analysis results, and by aid of a CAD parametric model, structural and geometrical alternatives are proposed to improve the structural performance. A prototype based on this geometric principal has been fabricated and assembled to explore feasibility of the concept in the building scale.
