Biography

Architect and civil engineer, Prof. Dr. Yves Weinand is one of the most recognised researchers in the field of contemporary wood construction. Founder of the Bureau d'Etude Weinand, he has, since 1996, designed and worked on many emblematic wooden buildings, such as the Saint Loup Chapel, the new Vaudois Parliament or, more recently, the Timber Pavilion of Vidy in Lausanne. His fundamental research questions the technical and static possibilities of wooden materials. The interdisciplinary exploration carried out at the EPFL's Laboratory for Timber Constructions (Ibois), of which he is director, concerns wood in all its aspects, from round wood to manufactured wood. The recent research carried out at Ibois on free structures with wood-wood connections (without screw nor glue) has been the subject of several technological transfers, and stands as tangible proof of new possibilities for wood construction. Yves Weinand is currently working on a large-scale project for a hall for the head office of a joinery in Luxembourg, consisting of a succession of arches with spans of 22.5 to 53.7m, entirely assembled in wood ). Through new innovative approaches, the ambition of his research is to develop a new generation of renewable and ecological wooden construction.He is regularly invited to present his work at international symposia on timber construction.

Projector-based augmented stacking framework for irregularly shaped objects

Augmented reality in additive fabrication is predominantly applied to the manufacturing of structures from regularly shaped materials. Our work however embraces natural heterogeneity, by focusing on the assembly of irregularly shaped elements such as mineral scraps. We introduce a computer-aided framework with a 3D stacking engine and an augmented reality interface capable of guiding users through the balanced positioning of discrete and highly nonuniform objects according to an on-the-fly computed model and without prior trimming of the building unit. The pipeline is tested by the construction of two dry-stone structures (i.e., lacking any adhesives), and its accuracy is validated with a comparative study between the point cloud of the as-built digitized artifacts and the generated execution model, which shows an average 2.9 ± 1.8 cm error between the stones of the two models. We finally show how the proposed framework could be improved both in terms of software and hardware. In the interests of reproducibility, all the methods are shared as open source with the community.

A Collaborative Workflow to Automate the Design, Analysis, and Construction of Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures

This paper introduces a computational framework that fosters collaboration between architects, engineers, and contractors by bridging the gap between architectural design, structural analysis, and digital construction. The present research is oriented toward the formulation of an automatic design-to-construction pipeline for Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures (IATPS). This construction system is based on assembling timber panels through the sole interlocking of wood-wood connections inspired by traditional Japanese joinery. Prior research focused on developing distinct computational workflows and dealt with the automation of 3D modelling, numerical simulation, fabrication, and assembly separately. In the current study, a single and interactive design tool is presented. Its versatility is demonstrated through two case studies, as well as the assembly of a physical prototype with a robotic arm. Results indicate that efficiency in terms of data flow and stakeholder synergy is considerably increased. The proposed approach contributes to the†Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 by facilitating the collaborative design of sustainable timber structures. Besides, the research also contributes to SDG 9 as it paves the way for sustainable industrialisation of the timber construction sector through streamlined digital fabrication and robotic assembly processes. This reduces manufacturing time and associated costs while leveraging richer design possibilities.

Augmented-reality-assisted timber drilling with smart retrofitted tools

An ordinary electric drill was integrated into a context-aware augmented reality (AR) framework to assist in timber-drilling tasks. This study is a preliminary evaluation to detail technical challenges, potential bottlenecks, and accuracy of the proposed object- and tool-aware AR-assisted fabrication systems. In the designed workflow, computer vision tools and sensors are used to implement an inside-out tracking technique for retrofitted drills based on a reverse engineering approach. The approach allows workers to perform complex drilling angle operations according to computer-processed feedback instead of drawing, marking, or jigs. First, the developed methodology was presented, and its various devices and functioning phases were detailed. Second, this first proof of concept was evaluated by experimentally scanning produced drillings and comparing the discrepancies with their respective three-dimensional execution models. This study outlined improvements in the proposed tool-aware fabrication process and clarified the potential role of augmented carpentry in the digital fabrication landscape.
