Partitioned Algorithms for Fluid-Structure Interaction Problems in Haemodynamics

We consider the fluid-structure interaction problem arising in haemodynamic applications. The finite elasticity equations for the vessel are written in Lagrangian form, while the Navier-Stokes equations for the blood in Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian form. The resulting three fields problem (fluid/ structure/ fluid domain) is formalized via the introduction of three Lagrange multipliers and consistently discretized by p-th order backward differentiation formulae (BDFp). We focus on partitioned algorithms for its numerical solution, which consist in the successive solution of the three subproblems. We review several strategies that all rely on the exchange of Robin interface conditions and review their performances reported recently in the literature. We also analyze the stability of explicit partitioned procedures and convergence of iterative implicit partitioned procedures on a simple linear FSI problem for a general BDFp temporal discretizations.

We elaborate in this thesis the numerical simulation of the fluid-structure interaction by the spectral element method. To this end we consider the Navier-Stokes equations for a viscous Newtonian incompressible fluid with an elastic solid the movement of which being described by the equations of the dynamics. The arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation is introduced in the fluid governing equations to deal with the structure movement that is described in Lagrangian representation. The geometrical motion in each domain is built up by the mesh deformation. The space-time discretization of the full mathematical model rests upon the spectral element method. The solid is discretized in the space of polynomials of degree N, PN, while the fluid uses the PN - PN-2 approach. The efficiency of the ALE formulation is tested and validated through various applications. The full algorithm is based on a particular case of the staggered method. The simplified case of a solid immersed in a plane channel closes the thesis. It is then possible to draw the conclusions about the pros and cons of the proposed methodology.

Partitioned Solution of Geometrical Multiscale Problems for the Cardiovascular System

The aim of this work is the development of a geometrical multiscale framework for the simulation of the human cardiovascular system under either physiological or pathological conditions. More precisely, we devise numerical algorithms for the partitioned solution of geometrical multiscale problems made of different heterogeneous compartments that are implicitly coupled with each others. The driving motivation is the awareness that cardiovascular dynamics are governed by the global interplay between the compartments in the network. Thus, numerical simulations of stand-alone local components of the circulatory system cannot always predict effectively the physiological or pathological states of the patients, since they do not account for the interaction with the missing elements in the network. As a matter of fact, the geometrical multiscale method provides an automatic way to determine the boundary (more precisely, the interface) data for the specific problem of interest in absence of clinical measures and it also offers a platform where to study the interaction between local changes (due, for instance, to pathologies or surgical interventions) and the global systemic dynamics. To set up the framework an abstract setting is devised; the local specific mathematical equations (partial differential equations, differential algebraic equations, etc.) and the numerical approximation (finite elements, finite differences, etc.) of the heterogeneous compartments are hidden behind generic operators. Consequently, the resulting global interface problem is formulated and solved in a completely transparent way. The coupling between models of different dimensional scale (three-dimensional, one-dimensional, etc.) and type (Navier-Stokes, fluid-structure interaction, etc.) is addressed writing the interface equations in terms of scalar quantities, i.e., area, flow rate, and mean (total) normal stress. In the resulting flexible framework the heterogeneous models are treated as black boxes, each one equipped with a specific number of compatible interfaces such that (i) the arrangement of the compartments in the network can be easily manipulated, thus allowing a high level of customization in the design and optimization of the global geometrical multiscale model, (ii) the parallelization of the solution of the different compartments is straightforward, leading to the opportunity to make use of the latest high-performance computing facilities, and (iii) new models can be easily added and connected to the existing ones. The methodology and the algorithms devised throughout the work are tested over several applications, ranging from simple benchmark examples to more complex cardiovascular networks. In addition, two real clinical problems are addressed: the simulation of a patient-specific left ventricle affected by myocardial infarction and the study of the optimal position for the anastomosis of a left ventricle assist device cannula.

Numerical analysis of axisymmetric flows and methods for fluid-structure interaction arising in blood flow simulation

In this thesis we propose and analyze the numerical methods for the approximation of axisymmetric flows as well as algorithms suitable for the solution of fluid-structure interaction problems. Our investigation is aimed at, but are not restricted to, the simulation of the blood flow dynamics. The first part of this work deals with an axisymmetric fluid model based on three-dimensional incompressible Stokes or Navier–Stokes equations which are solved on a two-dimensional half-section of the domain under consideration. In particular we show optimal a priori error estimates for P1isoP2/P1 axisymmetric finite elements for the steady Stokes equations under the assumption that the domain and the data are axisymmetric and that the data have no angular component. Our analysis is carried out in the framework of weighted Sobolev spaces and takes advantage of a suitably defined Cl´ement type projection operator. We then introduce an axisymmetric formulation of the Navier–Stokes equations in moving domains and, starting from existing results in three-dimensions, we set up an Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) formulation and prove some stability results. In the second part, we deal with algorithms for the solution of fluid-structure interaction problems. We introduce the problem in a generic form where the fluid is described by means of incompressible Navier–Stokes equations and the structure by a viscoelastic model. We account for large deformations of the structure and we show how existing algorithms may be improved to reduce the computational time. In particular we show how to use transpiration boundary conditions to approximate the fluid-structure problem in a fixed point strategy. Moreover, in a quasi-Newton strategy we reduce the cost by replacing the Jacobian with inexact Jacobians stemming from reduced physical models for the problem at hand. To speed up the convergence of the Newton algorithm, we also define a dynamic preconditioner and an acceleration scheme which have been successfully tested in haemodynamics simulations in two and three dimensions.
