Measurement of CP Violation in the Phase Space of B-+/- -> K+K-pi(+/-) and B-+/- -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(+/-) Decays

The charmless decays B-+/- -> K+K-pi(+/-) and B -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(+/-) are reconstructed in a data set of pp collisions with an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) and center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, collected by LHCb in 2011. The inclusive charge asymmetries of these modes are measured to be A(CP)(B-+/- -> K+K-pi(+/-)) = -0.141 +/- 0.040(stat) +/- 0.018(syst) +/- 0.007(J/psi K-+/-) and A(CP)(B +/- -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(+/-)) = 0.117 +/- 0.021 (stat) +/- 0.009 (syst) +/- 0.007(J/psi K-+/-), where the third uncertainty is due to the CP asymmetry of the B-+/- -> J/psi K-+/- reference mode. In addition to the inclusive CP asymmetries, larger asymmetries are observed in localized regions of phase space.

The inclusive charge asymmetries of these modes are measured as A(CP)(B-+/- -> (KK+K-)-K-+/-) =0.032 +/- 0.008(stat)+/- 0.004(syst)+/- 0.007(J/psi K-+/-), and A(CP)(B-+/- -> (KK+K-)-K-+/-) = -0.043 +/- 0.009(stat)+/- 0.003 (syst) = 0.007(J/psi K-+/-), where the third uncertainty is due to the CP asymmetry of the B-+/- -> J/psi K-+/- reference mode. The significance of A(CP)(B-+/- -> (KK+K-)-K-+/-) exceeds three standard deviations and is the first evidence of an inclusive CP asymmetry in charmless three- body B decays. In addition to the inclusive CP asymmetries, larger asymmetries are observed in localized regions of phase space.

A search for CP violation in the phase-space structures of 130 and 15 decays to the final states K-K+pi(-)pi(+) and pi(-)pi(+)pi(+)pi(-) is presented. The search is carried out with a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. For the K-K+pi(-)pi(+) final state, the four-body phase space is divided into 32 bins, each bin with approximately 1800 decays. The p-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 9.1%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 6.5% observed. The phase space of the pi(-)pi(+)pi(+)pi(-). final state is partitioned into 128 bins, each bin with approximately 2500 decays. The p-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 41%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 5.5% observed. A first study of CP violation in the decay modes B-+/- -> (KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+)h(+/-) and B-+/- -> (KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+)h(+/-), where h labels a K or pi meson and D labels a D-0 or (D) over bar (0) meson, is performed. The analysis uses the LHCb data set collected in pp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1). The analysis is sensitive to the CP-violating CKM phase gamma through seven observables: one charge asymmetry in each of the four modes and three ratios of the charge-integrated yields.
