Abstract

Punching shear resistance usually constitutes the decisive design criterion for reinforced concrete flat slabs supported by columns. Modeling approaches based on Kinnunen and Nylander's rotation-symmetric sector model, such as the Quadrilinear Sector Model (QSM), allow the prediction of the slab's load rotation behavior. To take into account an orthogonal reinforcement layout, the steel Young's Modulus is usually reduced. A mechanically better justified flexural stiffness reduction factor is derived here which depends on the longitudinal reinforcement and modular ratio. The QSM also neglects shear deformations, which may reduce the flexural capacity. A Modified Sector Model (MSM) is derived which considers the influence of shear on the flexural behavior. A strength reduction factor for the shear crack-crossing longitudinal reinforcement is introduced which depends on the mechanical longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The factor takes into account that the longitudinal reinforcement also has to transmit forces resulting from shear. The MSM can also be applied to predict the load rotation responses and punching shear resistances of flat slabs strengthened with prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) straps. Effect of Deformation History on Punching Resistance of Reinforced Concrete Slabs

Deformation-dependent punching shear resistance often constitutes the decisive design criterion for reinforced concrete slabs supported by columns. The increasing number of aging structures exhibiting insufficient punching resistance and detailing deficiencies, and undergoing changes of usage has resulted in a growing demand for strengthening against brittle punching failure. Hence, the research presented in this thesis aims at gaining a better understanding of the identified problems occurring especially in existing structures, such as pre-deformation. A further objective is the experimental and theoretical validation of the performance of a new strengthening concept. A detailed analysis is carried out of the structural behavior of centrically supported rotation-symmetric slabs subjected to punching. In the first part of this research project a literature review is conducted to characterize the available punching models for new slabs and discuss to what extent they are able to consider the problems linked with existing slabs. Benefits and limitations of current strengthening solutions are illustrated, suggesting local prestressing as a promising concept. In the second part such a concept is analyzed that has been developed to improve the system efficiency and punching resistance by immediately activating the post-installed shear reinforcement composed of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites, thus partially unloading the slab. An experimental campaign comprising sixteen slabs verifies that the installation of this strengthening concept leads to a more ductile system behavior and significant increase of punching resistance compared to a non-strengthened slab. In the third part the load-deformation behavior of slabs is analyzed and a modification of an analytical model applied to a slab sector is developed, considering the influence of shear on flexural behavior. An overestimation of the flexural capacity and consequently of the punching resistance is thus avoided. The agreement of the modified sector model results with experimental results is confirmed for a large number of experiments from literature. The model is also capable of predicting the load-rotation responses and punching resistances of slabs strengthened with prestressed CFRP straps. The fourth part of the research concerns the effect of pre-deformation, or load history, on the structural behavior of uniaxial members and biaxial slabs. Single unloading and reloading cycles, which reduce tension stiffening and result in additional deformations, leading to decreased concrete punching resistance, are investigated. In slabs prestressed CFRP straps can compensate the additional deformations caused by load history.

When building new bridge structures, or widening or replacing existing bridges, the duration of on site work has a significant influence not only on the costs, but also on the potentially harmful effects (noise, pollution, traffic jam, deviation) of the construction work. Thus, it is of interest to design structures in such a way as to minimize the construction time. Steel-concrete composite bridges are ideal for this purpose: the steel beams may be welded and the concrete slab precast in the shop, leaving only the erection and assembly work to be performed on site. Currently, however, the steel-concrete connections used in composite bridges are not well adapted for the use with precast slabs, as they tend to slow down the assembly work and decrease the durability of the slab. Consequently, there is a need to develop new types of connections. Connections by adherence, whose resistance is due to friction between the various interfaces, constitute a very promising solution to this problem. The current state of knowledge is incomplete, however, and should be improved in order to make the use of connections by adherence possible in practice. The goals of the research presented herein are to evaluate the practical value of connections by adherence, to develop analysis method and tools making it possible to predict their behaviour and to propose a design method for composite beams employing connections by adherence. To achieve these goals, the requirements that must be met by connections in steel-concrete composite bridges are first defined. Then, the behaviour of connections by adherence is studied in the following steps: - model the behaviour of confined interfaces loaded in shear with the help of experimental and analytical studies, - study the mechanical behaviour of connections by adherence, and especially their deformation behaviour, with the help of push-out tests, - create and validate an analysis tool that makes it possible to predict the behaviour of connections by adherence, - use this model in a parametric study to obtain results to be used in the development of a simplified design method capable of predicting the ultimate shear resistance, - develop and validate a design method for steel-concrete composite beams with connections by adherence. Finally, a comparison between the requirements defined at the beginning of the study and the calculated or measured characteristics of connections by adherence is performed. This makes it possible to evaluate the practical value of these connections and to define the needs for further research. Several important conclusions are drawn from this work. First, it is shown that connections by adherence meet the specified requirements of robustness, economy and reliability. Their high longitudinal shear resistance and stiffness ensure excellent static behaviour, both under service and ultimate loads. Secondly, it is demonstrated that the behaviour of these connections may be explained and modelled with the help of laws governing the behaviour of confined interfaces loaded in shear. The confinement is due partially to the strong interaction existing between the different interfaces and partially to the effect of the concrete slab around the connector. Finally, it is shown that, although a plastic calculation of the shear forces along the bridge axis can not be performed with these connections, it is possible to perform a plastic design of the cross section provided that the consequences of this calculation on the elastic longitudinal shear force distribution are taken into account. The work carried out in this thesis has made it possible to propose design tools for composite beams with a connection by adherence. Those tools, scientifically founded, should help to increase the use of such connections in practice.

Post-tensioned glass beams

Over the last few decades, the application of glass in building construction has extended from small four-side supported windowpanes to areas traditionally reserved for other materials, such as roofs, floors, staircases and full building envelopes. Glass is nowadays applied as a primary structural element - a beam, column, wall or shell; however, its intrinsic brittleness calls for adequate safety concepts to account for the consequences of glass failure. Although very strong on the inter-atomic level, the flaws which arise on the glass surface during production and service life of glass elements, significantly decrease its effective tensile strength. The concept of post-tensioned glass beams continues on the concrete analogy of the reinforced glass beams, which has been validated over the past years for various loading and environmental conditions. Adding ductile reinforcement in the tensile zone of a glass beam significantly enhances the post-cracking behaviour and redundancy. By additionally prestressing the reinforcement in a post-tensioned system, a compressive pre-stress is applied on the glass beam, enhancing the initial cracking resistance by compensating for rather low tensile strength of glass. Compressive pre-stress may fully counter the tensile stresses induced by permanent loads, diminishing the negative effect of stress corrosion on long term tensile strength of glass. Furthermore, in case of glass cracking, the tendon bridges the cracks, providing ductile failure behaviour, as in the reinforced beam concept. This research aims to increase the understanding of the structural response of post-tensioned glass beams through experimental and analytical investigations and provide calculation tools which will facilitate the application of the developed beam systems in structural glass projects. The chosen beam layouts aim to maintain the visual simplicity of the common glass beams, comprising laminated glass panes and flat stainless steel tendons, incorporated in the glass section. To investigate the structural behaviour of post-tensioned glass beams, three beam systems with varying beam layout, post-tensioning method and level of pre-load are tested in four-point bending. The observed behaviour is interpreted with analytical models, which focus on the failure mechanisms at two stages: during post-tensioning procedure and during tests in bending. For the considered failure modes, which govern the load capacity of explored beam systems, allowable post-tensioning pre-load and flexural resistance can be determined based on the provided analytical expressions. Failure controlled by shear is qualitatively analysed based on the kinematics of a critical shear crack, which shows the potential importance of this failure mechanism and will serve as a basis for future research on the shear capacity of glass beam members. The proposed systems demonstrate the feasibility of post-tensioning glass beams in terms of enhanced resistance at serviceability limit states with a more efficient use of material, as well as increased safety in the event of glass failure achieved through ductile failure behaviour.
