A review: Can robots reshape K-12 STEM education?

Can robots in classroom reshape K-12 STEM education, and foster new ways of learning? To sketch an answer, this article reviews, side-by-side, existing literature on robot-based learning activities featuring mathematics and physics (purposefully putting aside the well-studied field of "robots to teach robotics") and existing robot platforms and toolkits suited for classroom environment (in terms of cost, ease of use, orchestration load for the teacher, etc.). Our survey suggests that the use of robots in classroom has indeed moved from purely technology to education, to encompass new didactic fields. We however identified several shortcomings, in terms of robotic platforms and teaching environments, that contribute to the limited presence of robotics in existing curricula; the lack of specific teacher training being likely pivotal. Finally, we propose an educational framework merging the tangibility of robots with the advanced visibility of augmented reality.

Cellulo: Tangible Haptic Swarm Robots for Learning

Robots are steadily becoming one of the significant 21st century learning technologies that aim to improve education within both formal and informal environments. Such robots, called Robots for Learning, have so far been utilized as constructionist tools or social agents that aided learning from distinct perspectives. This thesis presents a novel approach to Robots for Learning that aims to explore new added values by means of investigating uses for robots in educational scenarios beyond those that are commonly tackled: We develop a platform from scratch to be "as versatile as pen and paper", namely as composed of easy to use objects that feel like they belong in the learning ecosystem while being seamlessly usable across many activities that help teach a variety of subjects. Following this analogy, we design our platform as many low-cost, palm-sized tangible robots that operate on printed paper sheets, controlled by readily available mobile computers such as smartphones or tablets. From the learners' perspective, our robots are thus physical and manipulable points of hands-on interaction with learning activities where they play the role of both abstract and concrete objects that are otherwise not easily represented. We realize our novel platform in four incremental phases, each of which consists of a development stage and multiple subsequent validation stages. First, we develop accurately positioned tangibles, characterize their localization performance and test the learners' interaction with our tangibles in a playful activity. Second, we integrate mobility into our tangibles and make them full-blown robots, characterize their locomotion performance and test the emerging notion of moving vs. being moved in a learning activity. Third, we enable haptic feedback capability on our robots, measure their range of usability and test them within a complete lesson that highlights this newly developed affordance. Fourth, we develop the means of building swarms with our haptic-enabled tangible robots and test the final form of our platform in a lesson co-designed with a teacher. Our effort thus contains the participation of more than 370 child learners over the span of these phases, which leads to the initial insights into this novel Robots for Learning avenue. Besides its main contributions to education, this thesis further contributes to a range of research fields related to our technological developments, such as positioning systems, robotic mechanism design, haptic interfaces and swarm robotics.

A two years informal learning experience using the Thymio robot

Technology is playing an increasing role in our society. Therefore it becomes important to educate the general public, and young generations in particular, about the most common technologies. In this context, robots are excellent education tools, for many reasons: (i) robots are fascinating and attract the attention of all population classes, (ii) because they move and react to their environment, robots are perceived as close to living beings, which make people attracted and attached to them, (iii) robots are multidisciplinary systems and can illustrate technological principles in electronics, mechanics, computer and communication sciences, and (iv) robots have many applications ﬁelds: medical, industrial, agricultural, safety ... While several robots exist on the market and are used for education, entertainment or both, none ﬁts with the dream educational tool: promoting creativity and learning, entertaining, cheap and powerful. We addressed this goal by developing the Thymio robot and distributing it during workshops over two years. This paper describes the design principles of the robot, the educational context, and the analysis made with 65 parents after two years of use. We conclude the paper by outlining the speciﬁcations of a new form of educational robot.

Introducing Productive Engagement for Social Robots Supporting Learning

We have all been one such student or seen such students who can maintain the 'good student' image while playing a video game under the table or those loyal backbenchers, seemingly always distracted, who then ace their exams. These intricacies of human behaviors are just a few examples of what makes it non-trivial and challenging even for expert teachers to know how students' visible behaviors relate with learning. As research investigates ways in which robots and AI can support teachers and students, it is faced with the same challenge of inferring students' engagement; thus, making the investigation of this topic increasingly popular in educational HRI. The state of the art usually explores the relationship between the robot behaviors and the engagement state of the learner while assuming a linear relationship between engagement and learning. However, is it correct to assume that to maximize learning, one needs to maximize engagement? Furthermore, conventional supervised engagement models require human annotators to get labels. This not only is laborious but can also introduce subjectivity. Can we have machine-learning engagement models where annotations do not rely on human annotators? Additionally, with the increase in open-ended learning activities which by design employ the 'learning by failing' paradigm, in-task performance can not be the best measure for learning. Can we instead rely on multi-modal behaviors? In an effort to cater for these challenges, this thesis dives deep to identify and quantify the relationship between learning and engagement, which we term as Productive Engagement (PE). In order to develop, design, and evaluate our PE framework, (1) we first designed and developed an open-ended collaborative learning activity that served as a platform for evaluating different robot variants over time. With 98 children interacting with the baseline version from 2 international Swiss schools, we showed that in-task performance and learning are indeed not correlated. Thus, this showed the importance of not being limited to robot interventions that affect only superficial measures of students' learning. (2) Then, with learner's multi-modal behaviors, we showed that indeed there is a hidden link between learner's behaviors and learning that can be quantified, i.e., validating the proposed concept of Productive Engagement. (3) This quantifiable link surfaced three collaborative multi-modal learner profiles, by using a forward and backward clustering and classification technique, two of which are linked to higher learning. This technique gave a possibility to surface data driven labels for engagement; thus, evading the process of human annotations. We then identified similarities and differences between these learner profiles both at an aggregate and at the temporal level. (4) Based on (3), we constructed a PE score that can either be directly used as an assessment metric by a social robot in real-time or as data driven labels for building more sophisticated regression models. (5) With the learner profiles and the PE score, we designed and evaluated more advanced robot variants for the final studies with ~160 students from 7 international Swiss schools. With the design of different robot variants that employ knowledge about the learner's skills conducive to learning, rather than domain knowledge, in order to provide interventions; we provided a complementary perspective on the role of social robots in educational settings.
