Control and Study of the Stoichiometry in Evaporated Perovskite Solar Cells

Herein, we present the precise stoichiometric control of methlyammonium lead iodide perovskite thin-films using high vacuum dual-source vapor-phase deposition. We found that UV/Vis absorption and emission spectra were inadequate for assessing precisely the perovskite composition. Alternatively, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is used to give precise, reproducible, quantitative measurements of the I/Pb ratio without systematic errors that often result from varying device thicknesses and morphologies. This controlled deposition method enables better understanding of the evaporation and deposition processes; methylammonium iodide evaporation appears omnidirectional, controlled using the chamber pressure and incorporated in the film through interaction with the unidirectionally evaporated PbI2. Furthermore, these thin-films were incorporated into solar cell device architectures with the best photovoltaic performance and reproducibility obtained for devices made with stoichiometric perovskite active layers. Additionally, and particularly pertinent to the field of perovskite photovoltaics, we found that the I-V hysteresis was unaffected by varying the film stoichiometry.

Fundamentals of perovskite formation for photovoltaics

Perovskite solar cells have become strong contenders in the arena of photovoltaics due to the stunning rise in their efficiency from 3 % to over 20 % in just seven years. In this time, numerous device architectures and thin film deposition methods have been explored. The sequential deposition and anti-solvent methods are among the most widely used for preparing perovskite solar cells. Optimizing these perovskite deposition processes to tune the perovskite film morphology plays a key role in the race for the highest efficiencies as homogeneity of the film correlates with superior photovoltaic performance. To date, the factors controlling perovskite film formation in various deposition methods and the precise mechanism are little understood. In light of this, the aim of the thesis is to unravel the salient aspects of perovskite film formation. I first study the formation of methylammonium lead iodide in sequential deposition using confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). I discover that illumination during film formation is a major factor in the reaction as it greatly accelerates perovskite formation and tunes the final film morphology by controlling nucleation of lead iodide. The nucleation density increases logarithmically with the illumination intensity. I uncover the mechanism behind this effect and demonstrate that it is a quantum phenomenon and not merely a heating effect. I posit that absorbed light lowers the surface tension, thereby facilitating nucleation. Not only is this effect present in the main deposition methods â sequential deposition and the anti-solvent methods, but also in perovskites of more complex compositions that are employed in state-of-the-art solar cells. Second, I scrutinize the individual stages in the formation of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite in sequential deposition. SEM-cathodoluminescence imaging identifies the presence of mixed crystalline aggregates composed of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite and lead iodide in forming perovskite films. Using cross-sectional CLSM for the first time, I identify the directionality of perovskite formation. Kinetic monitoring and model fitting bring forward the Avrami models as the most suitable to quantify and represent the formation of perovskite under different conditions of temperature, film thickness and illumination. Finally, I identify a maturation effect in the perovskite film in solar cells stored in the dark and investigate the dynamic spontaneous coalescence of crystals in the film. During maturation, small crystals merge to form larger ones and this reduces the number of grain boundaries and the associated trap states, supressing non-radiative recombination. The photovoltaic performance of high efficiency solar cells thus increases and it is accompanied by a reduction in the hysteresis. Overall, apart from providing insights into the dynamic nature of deposited films, I present a fundamental understanding of the perovskite formation process in different deposition methods and for various compositions. Such a comprehensive picture aids in the achievement of high photovoltaic performance.

Sequential deposition as a route to high-performance perovskite-sensitized solar cells

Following pioneering work(1), solution-processable organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites-such as CH3NH3PbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I)-have attracted attention as light-harvesting materials for mesoscopic solar cells(2-15). So far, the perovskite pigment has been deposited in a single step onto mesoporous metal oxide films using a mixture of PbX2 and CH3NH3X in a common solvent. However, the uncontrolled precipitation of the perovskite produces large morphological variations, resulting in a wide spread of photovoltaic performance in the resulting devices, which hampers the prospects for practical applications. Here we describe a sequential deposition method for the formation of the perovskite pigment within the porous metal oxide film. PbI2 is first introduced from solution into a nanoporous titanium dioxide film and subsequently transformed into the perovskite by exposing it to a solution of CH3NH3I. We find that the conversion occurs within the nanoporous host as soon as the two components come into contact, permitting much better control over the perovskite morphology than is possible with the previously employed route. Using this technique for the fabrication of solid-state mesoscopic solar cells greatly increases the reproducibility of their performance and allows us to achieve a power conversion efficiency of approximately 15 per cent (measured under standard AM1.5G test conditions on solar zenith angle, solar light intensity and cell temperature). This two-step method should provide new opportunities for the fabrication of solution-processed photovoltaic cells with unprecedented power conversion efficiencies and high stability equal to or even greater than those of today's best thin-film photovoltaic devices.

The effect of illumination on the formation of metal halide perovskite films

Optimizing the morphology of metal halide perovskite films is an important way to improve the performance of solar cells(1) when these materials are used as light harvesters(2), because film homogeneity is correlated with photovoltaic performance(3). Many device architectures and processing techniques have been explored with the aim of achieving high-performance devices(4), including single-step deposition(5), sequential deposition(6,7) and anti-solvent methods(1,8). Earlier studies have looked at the influence of reaction conditions on film quality(3), such as the concentration of the reactants9,10 and the reaction temperature(11). However, the precise mechanism of the reaction and the main factors that govern it are poorly understood. The consequent lack of control is the main reason for the large variability observed in perovskite morphology and the related solar-cell performance(2,3). Here we show that light has a strong influence on the rate of perovskite formation and on film morphology in both of the main deposition methods currently used: sequential deposition and the anti-solvent method. We study the reaction of a metal halide (lead iodide) with an organic compound (methylammonium iodide) using confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The lead iodide crystallizes before the intercalation of methylammonium iodide commences, producing the methylammonium lead iodide perovskite. We find that the formation of perovskite via such a sequential deposition is much accelerated by light. The influence of light on morphology is reflected in a doubling of solar-cell efficiency. Conversely, using the anti-solvent method to form methyl ammonium lead iodide perovskite in a single step from the same starting materials, we find that the best photovoltaic performance is obtained when films are produced in the dark. The discovery of light-activated crystallization not only identifies a previously unknown source of variability in opto-electronic properties, but also opens up new ways of tuning morphology and structuring perovskites for various applications.
