Molecular Origin and Electrochemical Influence of Capacitive Surface States on Iron Oxide Photoanodes

The origin, the nature, and the electronic structure of surface defects causing surface states on metal oxides and their role in solar water splitting have been under scrutiny for several decades. In the present study, the surface of hematite films is treated with an oxygen plasma and then subject to a detailed investigation with electroanalytical methods and element orbital specific X-ray spectroscopy. We observe a systemic variation of photoelectrochemical properties with oxygen treatment time. Fe 2p and O is core level X-ray photoelectron spectra and resonant valence band photoemission at the Fe 3p edge reveal the filling of prevalent oxygen vacancies with concomitant oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ upon the oxygen treatment. The dc bias dependent impedance spectra confirm how a prevalent capacitive surface state, which evolves parallel with the photocurrent onset potential, becomes diminished upon oxygen treatment. Surface states of iron induce higher reactivity toward water oxidation than oxygen surface states. correlation between oxygen vacancy filling, concentration of surface states, and photocurrent density in the course of treatment confirms that the surface defects are of a capacitive nature and that the onset of water splitting can be considered as a result of dielectric breakdown in an interfacial hydroxide layer between photoanode and water.

Formation of an electron hole doped film in the alpha-Fe2O3 photoanode upon electrochemical oxidation

Solar hydrogen generation by water splitting in photoelectrochemical cells (PEC) is an appealing technology for a future hydrogen economy. Hematite is a prospective photoanode material in this respect because of its visible light conjugated band gap, its corrosion stability, its environmentally benign nature and its low cost. Its bulk and surface electronic structure has been under scrutiny for many decades and is considered critical for improvement of efficiency. In the present study, hematite films of nominally 500 nm thickness were obtained by dip-coating on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass slides and then anodised in 1 molar KOH at 500, 600, and 700 mV for 1, 10, 120 and 1440 minutes under dark conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectra recorded at the Fe 3p resonant absorption threshold show that the e(g) transition before the Fermi energy, which is well developed in the pristine hematite film, becomes depleted upon anodisation. The spectral weight of the e(g) peak decreases with the square-root of the anodisation time, pointing to a diffusion controlled process. The speed of this process increases with the anodisation potential, pointing to Arrhenius behaviour. Concomitantly, the weakly developed t(2g) peak intensity becomes enhanced in the same manner. This suggests that the surface of the photoanode contains Fe2+ species which become oxidized toward Fe3+ during anodisation. The kinetic behaviour derived from the experimental data suggests that the anodisation forms an electron hole doped film on and below the hematite surface.

Coupling of electrocatalysts to photoabsorbers for solar fuels production

The direct transformation of sunlight into fuels and chemicals has attracted considerable attention for the potential impact on the storage of solar energies at large scales and the reduction of CO2 emissions. More than 80% of our current global energy consumption comes from the burning of non-renewable fossil fuels which produces enormous quantities of CO2 and contributes to global warming. We believe today that the key to reduce our dependence on exhaustible natural resources and limit the emission of greenhouse gases is the transition to CO2-free renewable energy sources. However, harvesting of energy from renewable sources (i.e. solar, wind, tidal) is intermittent and the deployment of devices for their transformation into useful forms of energy (i.e. electricity, chemicals, fuels, biomass) in a global scale is conditioned upon the improvement in efficiency of the energy storage mechanisms. A promising approach to store energy is the use of sunlight to drive the production of hydrogen fuel from water. Hydrogen produced from water and sunlight can be transformed back to electricity on demand or be used to generate mechanical energy in cars to power the transportation industry. The oxidation of hydrogen generates useable energy and at the same time exhaust clean, carbon-free water as the only product. Therefore, the production of hydrogen using a renewable energy source in an efficient and inexpensive device has the potential to discourage the continued use of fossil fuels and improve our environment. The viability of any mechanism for the storage of sunlight as fuel will depend on the reduction of energy penalties during the transformation process. Electrocatalysts are advanced materials that bring into one active site electrons and molecules in the appropriate orientation to lower activation energy barriers, accelerate rate of transformations and improve overall efficiencies for chemical reactions. The best catalysts for water splitting are precious metals such as Pt, Ir and Ru, which show superior rates of reaction at low overpotentials. However, these noble metals are too expensive and scarce for large scale applications. This thesis summarizes our recent research in the preparation, characterization, and application of Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for solar water splitting. Although in the last decade a great number of efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts have been reported, methods for the deposition of these materials on the surface of photoabsorbers are rarely reported. This work shows various simple and scalable techniques for the deposition of hydrogen and oxygen evolving electrocatalysts on the surface of photocathodes and photoanodes, respectively. Surface-protected photocahodes were activated for solar hydrogen production in alkaline conditions with MoS2+x, Ni-Mo and Mo2C. A novel method for the deposition of an optically transparent amorphous iron nickel oxide oxygen evolution electrocatalyst is also reported. The catalyst was deposited on both thin film and high-aspect ratio nanostructured hematite photoanodes. The low catalyst loading combined with its high activity at low overpotential results in significant improvement on the onset potential for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. This transparent catalyst further enables the preparation of a stable hematite/perovskite solar cell tandem device, which performs unassisted water splitting.

Water Oxidation Kinetics of Accumulated Holes on the Surface of a TiO2 Photoanode: A Rate Law Analysis

It has been more than 40 years since Fujishima and Honda demonstrated water splitting using TiO2, yet there is still no clear mechanism by which surface holes on TiO2 oxidize water. In this paper, we use a range of complementary techniques to study this reaction that provide a unique insight into the reaction mechanism. Using transient photocurrent and transient absorption spectroscopy, we measure both the kinetics of electron extraction (t(50%) approximate to 200 mu s, 1.5V(RHE)) and the kinetics of hole oxidation of water (t(50%) approximate to 100 ms, 1.5V(RHE)) as a function of applied potential, demonstrating the water oxidation by TiO2 holes is the kinetic bottleneck in this water-splitting system. Photoinduced absorption spectroscopy measurements under 5 s LED irradiation are used to monitor the accumulation of surface TiO2 holes under conditions of photoelectrochemical water oxidation. Under these conditions, we find that the surface density of these holes increases nonlinearly with photocurrent density. In alkali (pH 13.6), this corresponded to a rate law for water oxidation that is third order with respect to surface hole density, with a rate constant k(WO) = 22 +/- 2 nm(4).s(-1). Under neutral (pH = 6.7) and acidic (pH = 0.6) conditions, the rate law was second order with respect to surface hole density, indicative of a change in reaction mechanism. Although a change in reaction order was observed, the rate of reaction did not change significantly over the wide pH range examined (with TOFs per surface hole in the region of 20-25 s(-1) at similar to 1 sun irradiance). This showed that the rate-limiting step does not involve OH- nucleophilic attack and demonstrated the versatility of TiO2 as an active water oxidation photocatalyst over a wide range of pH.
