Molecular insights in aqueous systems

The unique structure and dynamics of the water hydrogen (H)-bond network enable a multitude of structures and chemical reactions in both bulk solutions and at interfaces. The underlying molecular interactions between water and dissolved electrolytes, organic molecules, and nanoscale interfaces are difficult to study and hence not fully understood, especially when it involves interactions of length scales larger than one nanometer. In this thesis, we perform second order nonlinear light scattering experiments to investigate extended hydration shells (over one nanometer) and interfacial structures of buried aqueous interfaces that surround nanodroplets. We investigate the spatial range of ion-water interactions by probing the molecular structure of the water network in dilute electrolyte solutions. We find that electrolytes induce long-range, non-ion-specific orientational order in the H-bond network of water (over distances up to 70 hydration shells or 20 nm). These modifications in the water network start at electrolyte concentrations as low as 10 micromolar. The amount of induced orientational order and the concentration at which it occurs is different between light and heavy water. We link the observed ion induced changes in the bulk H-bond network of water to ion induced surface tension anomalies that occur in the same concentration range. We also study the same interactions in solutions with higher electrolyte concentrations focusing on cations. We observe specific ion effects in both the local charge distribution and water ordering in extended hydration shells of ions. Cations with larger charge densities induce larger changes in these two observables that follow a direct Hofmeister trend. The ion-induced structural changes in the water network are strongly correlated with the viscosity B-coefficient and hydration free energy of cations. These correlations facilitate constructing a better molecular model for specific ion effects in aqueous solutions. Next, we study the nanoscale hydrophobe/water interface and related interactions by probing the molecular structure of the interface formed with amphiphilic alkanols. We find that alkanols form a fluid film at the oil nanodroplet surface. Long chain alkanols show similar molecular structures and number densities at the interface. With increasing alkanol density, interfacial water loses its initial orientational alignment. The structure of interfacial oil molecules is more distorted for shorter alkanols. This interfacial structure differs significantly from those of macroscopic planar alkanol/water and alkanol/air interfaces and charged surfactant/oil/water interface, which can be explained by the balance between dispersive and H-bonding interactions. Finally, we develop a new membrane model system: 3D-lipid monolayers with tunable molecular structure on oil nanodroplets in water. This in-situ prepared system mimics the structure of lipid droplets in cells. The interfacial structure of lipids can be tuned from a tightly packed monolayer (liquid condensed phase) to a dilute one (liquid condensed/liquid expanded coexistence phase) by varying the lipid/oil/water ratio. The tunability of the chemical structure, the high surface-to-volume ratio, and the small sample volume make this system ideal for studies of molecular interactions of lipids in membranes.

Molecular ordering effects in bulk and at lipid/water nanoscopic interfaces: A story of water, light, and order

Water is ubiquitous on Earth, playing a critical role for a plethora of structures, processes and chemical reactions in nature. Its unique physicochemical properties originate mainly from its hydrogen bond network. Despite its recognized importance, many aspects of the structure of water as a liquid remain elusive. It is especially difficult to understand the complex nature of fluctuations and ordering in pure water, or to get a complete picture of aqueous interfaces at the molecular level. In this thesis, our aim is to improve our understanding of the underlying interactions between water and ions, macromolecules, and interfaces, especially the long range interactions. To this aim, we use two nonlinear optical techniques, second harmonic scattering (SHS) and vibrational sum frequency scattering (SFS), on liquid water as well as on model lipid membranes mimicking the cell membranes.We investigate with SHS how the orientational ordering of water molecules is affected by temperature changes and nuclear quantum effects. Scattering measurements of pure water reveal that the intermolecular correlations undergo a symmetry transformation with increasing temperature. On the other hand, with increasing temperature, aqueous electrolyte solutions exhibit a diminished influence of the combined electrostatic field on the water- water correlations. This trend is predicted qualitatively by a Debye-Hückel model, but not quantitatively due to its non-inclusion of hydrogen bonding and nuclear quantum effects. These insights facilitate the elaboration of future nuclear quantum mechanical models of water.The same interactions are further studied by a comparison of pure liquid water and pure liquid carbon tetrachloride. SHS measurements and simulations reveal that transient nanoscale voids exist in water and carbon tetrachloride. The coherent SHS emissions observed in water are generated by charge density fluctuations around the cavities. These measurements strongly hint towards non-uniformity in the structure of water, on femtosecond timescale and nanometric range.Next, we turn towards the structure of water around model lipid membranes. We explore first the three-dimensional confinement of liquid water inside liposomes of various size. By analyzing SHS patterns of zwitterionic and anionic liposomes, we observe that the effect of confinement is visible on a range of a hundred nanometers, larger compared to the previously reported ranges on the order of a nanometer or about ten nanometers. The water orientational ordering at the interface as well as the surface potential of the liposomes are retrieved with a nonlinear light scattering modeling, showing that the confinement effect is mainly attributable to the hydrogen bond network. The effect is in particular 8 times larger for light water than for heavy water.Finally, we investigate how the water structure is modified around lipid monolayers and bilayers. The hydration of lipid membranes is asymmetric with respect to charge. SHS and vibrational SFS reveal that the charge hydration asymmetry is drastically different depending on the nature of the lipid layer. It depends on a delicate balance between electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions. The charge hydration asymmetry is further modified by the presence of charges on the lipid headgroups on both sides of the bilayers.

Single-molecule-level characterization of supramolecular systems at surfaces

This thesis deals with the self-organization of individual building blocks, specifically organic molecules and metal atoms, into supramolecular structures on metal surfaces under ultra high vacuum conditions (UHV). Self-organization of supramolecular systems is a promising candidate for a bottom-up approach in the fabrication of complex structures with specific properties. This process is steered by interactions between functional groups of the individual building blocks and is of apparent interest to gain a detailed understanding of the influence and the behavior of these functional groups enabling intermolecular binding. In the first part of the thesis, we investigate hydrogen bonded structures on metal surfaces. Of especial interest is the possibility of the formation of ionic hydrogen bonds, a special class of hydrogen bond which connects a charged donor (acceptor) and a neutral acceptor (donor) and is important in biological systems. By combined Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) measurement we show the deprotonation of carboxylic functions in the molecules, forming carboxylate groups involved in intermolecular binding. With our complementary experimental and theoretical examinations we clearly show that the carboxylate groups are indeed still charged although adsorbed onto a conducting metal surface and that the observed structures can be computationally reproduced by using these charges in classical molecular dynamic calculations. Our investigations clearly reveal that all requirements for the formation of ionic hydrogen bonds in these samples at metal surfaces under solvent free conditions are fulfilled. In the second part, the confinement of surface state electrons in self-assembled hydrogen-bonded structures is investigated. The examined structure contains two-dimensional cavities, with different inner diameters in the periodic arrangement and in domain boundaries. Inside the cavities we detect a spatially localized modification in the local density of states (LDOS) of the Ag(111) surface state electrons. The energy of the peak correlates with the cavity area as predicted by a simple "particle in a box" model. This clearly shows that the surface state electrons form a confined state inside the cavities. Furthermore we examine self-assembled periodic structures as templates for binding single macrocyclic molecules. The macrocyclic molecules can be deposited by sublimation, as STM-topographs with submolecular resolution reflect the shape of the intact molecules and reveal a coverage dependent aggregation behavior. We show that it is possible to fabricate a structure in which at most one macrocyclic molecule per pore can be found in a defined binding position. In the last part of the thesis we investigate the influence of individual metal atoms on the chemical activity and the self-assembly process of molecules on metal surfaces. First, we demonstrate the high chemical reactivity of these metal atoms. In our experiments we address the chemical reactivity of static active sites, like kinks and step edges, and of dynamic active sites, like the metal atoms, separately. Doing this we show that a non-negligible amount of the chemical reactivity of a metal surface is due to this dynamic adatom gas. Furthermore the influence of metal atoms on the structure formation of organic molecules is investigated. We show that two-dimensional structures based on a complex formation between metal centers and ligands can be formed and that the coordination number is independent of the substrate symmetry. Furthermore, we show the possibility that on metal surfaces one can prepare three-fold coordinated Fe-centers, a coordination number which is rarely seen in three dimensional chemistry. In the last part we study catenanes, which consist of two interlocked macrocyclic molecules. Main interest is on the confirmation of a structural change of the catenanes adsorbed on a metal substrate. For our experiments we use the fact that the catenanes are designed to "trap" a Cu-atom by complex formation. As this reaction is associated with a structural change and a change in intermolecular interaction, we can verify a reaction of catenanes adsorbed onto a surface with Cu adatoms and therefore a structural alteration by simply imaging the formed structures. Our measurements show the possibility of depositing large molecules like catenanes by sublimation and of their potential for use as molecular machines adsorbed onto metal surfaces.

Release kinetics of volatiles from smectite clay minerals

The focus of this thesis was on the mechanisms of release of volatile molecules from smectite clay minerals. The weight loss was monitored by thermogravimetry, differential calorimetry, and mass spectrometry under isothermal conditions and under ramp temperature conditions. Modeling of the clay-volatile release systems was performed with the help of finite element method calculations at the macroscopic level and ab initio calculations at the molecular level. A first comparison between finite element method simulations and experimental data for the evaporation of bulk volatile liquids under a convective gas flow showed the calculations to be in good agreement with experiments. Results of the simulations were used to develop a semi-analytical model explaining the dependence of the evaporation on the total pressure, the carrier gas flow, the temperature, and material constants. In particular, its temperature dependence could be approximated to good accuracy by an Arrhenius-type equation derived from the semi-analytical model. Differential calorimetry measurements of the heats of vaporization showed equilibrium conditions at the surface of the liquids to be satisfied. The same approach was extended to the release of model volatiles (water, ethanol, ethyl acetate and toluene) from smectite clays. At high coverage, the release was found to be close to that for the bulk liquids. Its decrease with time followed the behaviour observed in the respective curves of the gas/condensed phase partition coefficients, the equilibrium desorption isotherms. Equilibrium condition at the surface of the sample was evidenced by a comparison between the measured heats of vaporization and the equilibrium desorption isotherms. The differences observed in the measured equilibrium desorption isotherms of the volatile on the smectite clays could be rationalized by the use of ab initio calculations of the binding of the volatiles on the surface of a sodium smectite clay. At low coverage, the differences could be attributed to their differences in binding energies with the clay counter ions, which could be explained in terms of the chemical nature of the interacting species. At high coverage, the differences could be related to the properties of the bulk liquids, because high coverage corresponds to high activities of the volatiles on the clay samples. The differences observed in the measured rates of release of the volatiles from the smectite clays could be rationalized by the use of finite element calculations and the semi-analytical model developed for the bulk liquids, taking as input parameters the measured equilibrium desorption isotherms, that determines the volatile gas phase concentration at the surface of the sample. The slower rates of release of ethanol and ethyl acetate from the smectite clay, compared to water, could be explained from their differences in their equilibrium desorption isotherms from the clay, though diffusion effects also played a minor role. However, the slower rate of release of toluene, compared to water, could only be explained by its slow diffusion in the smectite clay. Diffusion effects were found to be enhanced with an increase in the size of the aggregate, such that, in addition to the binding strength of the counter ions, the swelling capacity of the clay, allowing the clay to clump, was also found to be an important factor for the controlled release of volatiles from the clay. Ion-exchange of the clay with lithium cations was found to be optimal in terms of ionic strength of the cation and swelling capacity, as compared to other metallic cations and small organic cations. This clay modification was tested on the release of malodorous compounds determined in cat urine by mass spectrometry and sniffing experiments. The smectite clay modified by ion-exchange with lithium cations showed improved controlled release of volatile organic compounds found in cat urine, compared to the sodium smectite, and improved clumping capacity compared to the calcium smectite. The calcium smectite clay used by Nestlé Purina could be modified by column exchange with lithium cations in high quantities. However the potential toxicity of the lithium is unknown. Additional information was obtained by ab initio calculations on the interaction of water with the smectite. The calculations of the binding of one to six water molecules on the surface of a sodium clay showed the water molecules bind to the cation and form hydrogen bonds between each other and with the clay oxygens, leading to the formation of different configurations for the same number of water molecules on the clay surface. With an increase in the number of water molecules on the surface of the clay, intermolecular interaction between the water molecules became gradually more important than sodium-water interactions. The binding energy was also found to be dependent on the location of the charge substitution in the clay (tetrahedral or octahedral) and to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the water molecule and a basal oxygen linked to a tetrahedral replacement. With an increase in the number of water molecules bound to one counter ion, the sodium counter ion was found to move away from the clay surface. The dynamic calculations of water molecules in the clay interlayer showed both the water molecules and the cations to be mobile. The average diffusion coefficient of the water molecules was reduced compared to that of bulk water, due to restrictions imposed by both the clay platelets and the counter ions. The structure of the water molecules showed to be similar to that of bulk water with a preferential orientation of their hydroxyl group almost perpendicular to the clay surface. The difference in the state of order of the water molecules around the sodium cation was interpreted as a symptom of hysteresis as observed in the measured equilibrium sorption isotherm.
