Electric-Field-Driven Direct Desulfurization

The ability to elucidate the elementary steps of a chemical reaction at the atomic scale is important for the detailed understanding of the processes involved, which is key to uncover avenues for improved reaction paths. Here, we track the chemical pathway of an irreversible direct desulfurization reaction of tetracenothiophene adsorbed on the Cu(111) closed-packed surface at the submolecular level. Using the precise control of the tip position in a scanning tunneling microscope and the electric field applied across the tunnel junction, the two carbon-sulfur bonds of a thiophene unit are successively cleaved. Comparison of spatially mapped molecular states close to the Fermi level of the metallic substrate acquired at each reaction step with density functional theory calculations reveals the two elementary steps of this reaction mechanism. The first reaction step is activated by an electric field larger than 2 V nm(-1), practically in absence of tunneling electrons, opening the thiophene ring and leading to a transient intermediate. Subsequently, at the same threshold electric field and with simultaneous injection of electrons into the molecule, the exergonic detachment of the sulfur atom is triggered. Thus, a stable molecule with a bifurcated end is obtained, which is covalently bound to the metallic surface. The sulfur atom is expelled from the vicinity of the molecule.

Monitoring Charge Carrier Dynamics at Atomic Length Scales by STM-induced Luminescence

The goal of this thesis is the combination of the high spatial resolution of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with the high temporal resolution of optical spectroscopy, by monitoring the light emitted from the tunnel junction. Two complementary techniques are presented, which allow (a) access to the local photon statistics and (b) following the luminescence response to nanosecond voltage pulses at atomic length scales. The versatility of these methods is demonstrated by using two different model systems: pure C60 films on Ag(111) and Au(111) substrates, as well as single fac-tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) (Ir(ppy)3) molecules adsorbed on them. These two systems reveal the possibility to investigate both the local charge carrier dynamics of mesoscopic systems as well as individually and selectively addressable quantum systems. Furthermore, these methods are not limited to pure emission processes such as the recombination of electron hole pairs; rather, it is also possible to study the dynamics of non-emitting processes via the excitation and radiation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) from the tunnel junction. To achieve high time resolutions in the luminescence response of an investigated system, a further technique is developed that permits a quantitative mapping of the voltage at the tunnel junction with millivolt and nanosecond accuracy. Knowing the precise shape of the voltage pulses arriving at the tunnel junction offers compensation for ubiquitous pulse distortions arising from reflections and attenuations of the pulses on their way to the tunnel junction, thus enabling pulse rise and falling times of a few nanoseconds. Investigations of the electronic structure of pure C60 films show that the electronic states of C60 multilayers experience a band bending in STM due to the electric field between the STM tip and the metal substrate. As the band bending is sufficiently strong to align the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals with the Fermi energy of the substrate, electrons can be injected by the substrate. At structural defects, these electrons can recombine with holes in the highest occupied molecular orbitals injected by the STM tip. At such defects, local deviations from the highly ordered structure of the C60 film result in localized electronic states within the band gap. These states act as traps for the injected electrons and holes and increase their lifetime such that they can recombine with each other. The underlying injection dynamics are accessible by the luminescence time response of these defects to nanosecond voltage pulses. Electrospray Ion Beam Deposition of Complex Non-Volatile Molecules

The rational synthesis of novel materials requires the control over the arrangement of matter in order to meet the desired properties for applications and devices. Ultimately, control means to define the place of each atom and determine its chemical state, as well as being able to confirm the result in a measurement. Control at the atomic level can be achieved with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), both in imaging and atomic manipulation. The latter, however, can never be used in meso- or even macroscopic material synthesis. Self-ordering phenomena determines atomic control in material synthesis as well, observed for instance in protein folding or in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technology. In both cases the atomically determined arrangement of the atoms in the structure is controlled only by environmental parameters that steer the self-ordering phenomena. In this thesis I show that electrospray ion beam deposition (ES-IBD) or ion soft-landing is a material processing technique, which combines and even extends the level of control offered by MBE. It is demonstrated that a vast range of complex organic materials including peptides and proteins is now available to ultrapure vacuum processing and moreover completely novel schemes of controlling self-ordering processes are provided. In-situ STM is applied to investigate the structure formation of complex molecules deposited by ES-IBD on well-defined, clean, and atomically flat surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum at the greatest detail. This allows us to explore the novel control features that are intrinsic to the ES-IBD deposition process like online coverage monitoring, deposition energy control, and mass-selection to select charge states or reactive species. The molecules studied here include organic molecular salts, dye molecules, reactive polymer building blocks, and finally peptides and proteins. Crystalline layer-by-layer as well as island growth was observed and revealed the equivalence to conventional MBE growth. On the basis of these deposition experiments the crucial influence of clusters in the ion beam for high material flux was discovered. Furthermore, it was found that the chemical state of the molecule is a key factor for the deposition result as chemical reactions can be induced or the self-assembly behavior can be altered. Alongside the capability to handle also extremely reactive molecules, the feasibility to control chemical reactions occurring as a result of an external stimulus to a specifically selected reactive species is demonstrated. Employing the control parameters that are specific to ES-IBD like charge state selection and deposition energy to complex biomolecules opens up new perspectives for vacuum deposition. In addition to the self-assembly governed by the molecule-substrate and molecule-molecule interaction, it was possible to actively steer the structure formation of proteins by influencing their stiffness and their reactivity through their charge state as well as by the deposition energy, parameters intrinsic to the ES-IBD method. Hence, electrospray ion beam deposition is indeed a tool to prepare well defined surface coatings at highest level of control and complexity. To be relevant for industrial applications, the performance of the system has to be further improved, most importantly in terms of deposition rate. In general, ES-IBD enables new approaches for the growth of functional coatings but also serving as perfect sample preparation tool for the characterization of complex molecules on the atomic scale by scanning probe or more general surface science methods.

Bonding and Charge Transfer in Metal-Organic Coordination Networks on Au(111) with Strong Acceptor Molecules

The geometric and electronic structure of two structurally similar metal organic networks grown on the Au(111) surface is investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The networks are composed of (i) F4TCNQ (C12F4N4, 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquino-dimethane) molecules and Au adatoms segregated from the pristine metal surface, and (ii) TCNQ (C12H4N4, 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) and codeposited Mn atoms. In both cases, the strong electron acceptor character of the molecules results in metal to-ligand charge transfer to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The amount of electrons donated from the 4-fold coordinated Mn atoms to TCNQ is higher compared to the 2-fold coordinated Au adatoms to F4TCNQ This behavior is reflected in the appearance of distinct spectral features in STS data in the energy region close to the Fermi level resulting from the intricate interplay between surface states, adatom states, and molecular orbitals. These observations are consistent with a picture in which the LUMO of the TCNQ acceptor molecule hybridizes with Mn and Au substrate metal states becoming practically filled, while the LUMO of F4TCNQ is only partially filled despite being the stronger electron acceptor. Our results reveal the importance of the type of bonding between the strong acceptor and the metal center (Au or Mn) as well as its coordination in the determination of the charge transfer to the adlayer, which is important for its electronic properties.
