Abstract

The existence of baryon asymmetry and dark matter in the Universe may be related to CP-violating reactions of three heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) with masses well below the Fermi scale. The dynamical description of the lepton asymmetry generation, which is the key ingredient of baryogenesis and of dark matter production, is quite complicated due to the presence of many different relaxation time scales and the necessity to include quantum-mechanical coherent effects in HNL oscillations. We derive kinetic equations accounting for fermion number violating effects missed so far and identify one of the domains of HNL masses that can potentially lead to large lepton asymmetry generation boosting the sterile neutrino dark matter production. We discuss the influence of strong CP-violating effects in invisible-axion models on electroweak baryogenesis. We find that they can be important only if the electroweak phase transition (EPT) occurs simultaneously with the chirality-breaking phase transition in QCD. The predicted baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) might be of order of the observable one only if there is no entropy production in the EPT. At the same time the dark-matter constraints put a lower bound on the temperature after the EPT, so that it is impossible to satisfy simultaneously both requirements (BAU and axion dark matter). We conclude that possible strong CP violation plays no role in electroweak baryogenesis, unless there exists some yet unknown mechanism for the BAU generation, producing baryons at a rate which has to be at least 3 orders of magnitude higher than the sphaleron-induced rate. In this kind of hypothetical scenario there is a prediction of the axionic dark matter in the Universe from the very existence of the baryon excess while the dark-matter density is generally of order or greater than that of the observed baryonic matter. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

We show how to enlarge the νMSM (the minimal extension of the Standard Model by three right-handed neutrinos) to incorporate inflation and provide a common source for electroweak symmetry breaking and for right-handed neutrino masses. In addition to inflation, the resulting theory can explain simultaneously dark matter and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe; it is consistent with experiments on neutrino oscillations and with all astrophysical and cosmological constraints on sterile neutrino as a dark matter candidate. We present a comprehensive overview of an extension of the Standard Model that contains three right-handed (sterile) neutrinos with masses below the electroweak scale [the Neutrino Minimal Standard Model (vMSM)]. We consider the history of the Universe from the inflationary era through today and demonstrate that most of the observed phenomena beyond the Standard Model can be explained within the framework of this model. We review the mechanism of baryon asymmetry of the Universe in the vMSM and discuss a dark matter candidate that can be warm or cold and that satisfies all existing constraints. From the viewpoint of particle physics, the model provides an explanation for neutrino flavor oscillations. Verification of the vMSM is possible with existing experimental techniques.
