Air pollution risk assessment on urban agriculture
2017 Student project
Abstract
Theoretical part (about 3 weeks from 20 Feb to 12 March) Literature search for current knowledge on air pollution in relation to urban farming: where is the accumulation; what kind of pollution can we find (dusts, dioxins, PM, heavy metalsâŠ); what are the thresholds on the vegetables and fruits? 2. Policy in the Netherlands (about 4 weeks, from 13 March to 9 April) Interviews and surveys with policy makers, trip around the Netherlands: are they aware on air pollution on urban agriculture; if so, how do they deal with it. 3. Practical (11 weeks) a. Measuring networks (airborne contamination) on spinach in two or three urban gardens in Amsterdam. Standard biomonitoring techniques will be used with focus on accumulation of heavy metals Cd and Hg and PAKs in spinach (database with reference data available) b. Analysis will be pursued in an external lab (I might not be able to do it). c. Modelling or describing of different scenarios for: uptake routes by the plants: gaseous uptake via stomata vs. deposition on surfaces; airborne vs soil uptake of pollution (buildings, parkings) The dates are not fixed, there probably will be some overlap between the three parts. It depends on the weather and the ability of making spinach to grow.

Urban agriculture refers to various practices of cultivating, processing, and distributing food in urban areas. The term also applies to the area activities of animal husbandry, aquaculture, beekeeping, and horticulture in an urban context. Urban agriculture is distinguished from peri-urban agriculture, which takes place in rural areas at the edge of suburbs. Urban agriculture can appear at varying levels of economic and social development.
Policy is a deliberate system of guidelines to guide decisions and achieve rational outcomes. A policy is a statement of intent and is implemented as a procedure or protocol. Policies are generally adopted by a governance body within an organization. Policies can assist in both subjective and objective decision making. Policies used in subjective decision-making usually assist senior management with decisions that must be based on the relative merits of a number of factors, and as a result, are often hard to test objectively, e.
Air pollution is the contamination of air due to the presence of substances in the atmosphere that are harmful to the health of humans and other living beings, or cause damage to the climate or to materials. It is also the contamination of indoor or outdoor surrounding either by chemical activities, physical or biological agents that alters the natural features of the atmosphere. There are many different types of air pollutants, such as gases (including ammonia, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, methane and chlorofluorocarbons), particulates (both organic and inorganic), and biological molecules.
In this study, leaf and soil samples were used as bio-monitors for different alkali and heavy metals at six different locations in Kyiv city. Using x–y plots of the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) data measured the discre ...
Ever since the links between the development of new technologies and economic growth became evident, researchers have attempted to study how the creation of knowledge fosters progress. If pushing the frontier of knowledge has an impact on progress and well ...
