Effect of Chaotropes on the Transfer of Ions and Dyes across the Liquid–Liquid Interface

Chaotropes such as urea can break the structure of water, weakening the hydrophobic effect and reducing aggregation. Here, we investigated how the addition of urea affects the transfer of ions and cationic dyes across the interface between immiscible electrolyte solutions, both water-1,2-dichloroethane and water-trifluorotoluene. For most cations, their half-wave potential of transfer shifted toward more negative values, indicating that it is easier to transfer these ions from the aqueous phase with urea to the organic phase, showing that the addition of urea decreases the solvation of ions in the aqueous phase. However, the half-wave potentials for a series of cationic phenothiazine dyes shifted toward more positive potentials, indicating improved solvation in urea solution. The effect of urea was investigated also by differential capacitance and electrocapillary curves, as well as by molecular dynamics simulations. Finally, electrochemistry at liquid–liquid interfaces allows determination of the transfer energies of ions between water and aqueous solutions of urea via a thermodynamic cycle.

Design, Synthesis and Characterization of New Nanoparticle Stabilizers and Their Application in Catalysis

In recent years, a strong emphasis in research towards creating sustainable and environmental friendly chemical processes has propelled the development of novel types of catalytic systems that combine advantages from homogeneous and heterogeneous processes. In this respect, transition metal based nanoparticles, TM-NPs, are excellent candidates with properties that offer high efficiency, high selectivity and the possibility of recycling. However, due to the particularly small size, within the nanoscale, TM-NPs are generally only kinetically stable and must be supported or stabilized by molecular systems to prevent aggregation into larger, less active materials. The work presented herein concerns the design, synthesis, characterisation and the applications of new TM-NP protecting agents, which are based on polymers functionalized with components that compose ionic liquids, P-ILs. Specifically, these P-ILs feature a hydrophobic poly-norbornene framework prepared using Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization, ROMP, with pendant imidazolium-based ionic liquid substituents that allow fine tuning of the polymer solubility by anion-exchange. In Chapter 2, an aqueous, soluble P-IL containing the 1,2-dimethylimidazolium methane-sulphonate substituent and its use in the synthesis of aqueous gold NP, GNP, solutions is described. These particular TM-NPs were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy, TEM. Subsequently, the P-IL/GNP solutions were used to catalyse the reduction of p-nitrophenol and the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde, both reactions are found to exhibit excellent activity under mild conditions. In Chapter 3, the potential of aqueous P-IL stabilizers to transfer GNPs from water to hydrophobic ILs and organic solvents is demonstrated. Using an anion-exchange process, the phase change does not result in GNP aggregation, as confirmed by UV-VIS spectroscopy and TEM analysis. Moreover, the same P-ILs were used as a protecting agents for the synthesis of aqueous rhodium NPs, RhNPs, which have been applied in the catalytic hydrogenation of natural compounds, including limonene, cinnamaldehyde, citral and α- and β-ionones. Through anion-exchange, the aqueous P-IL stabilized RhNPs are readily transferred into hydrophobic ILs, then used as catalysts in the hydrogenation of styrene and limonene. The stabilized RhNPs exhibited good activity, even after recycling. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, XPS, analysis demonstrated conclusively that the anion exchange and phase transfer of the Rh/Au-NP-IL system. In Chapter 4, three P-ILs containing poly-oxy linker groups, strategically placed between the poly-norbornene framework and the ionic groups, are described. The linkers provide additional stabilization through steric stabilization and coordination via the ether functional groups. These P-ILs were used to stabilize aqueous GNPs, which were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy and TEM. Their application in the reduction of p-nitrophenol reduction was demonstrated. Preliminary studies on the stabilization mode of PILs shown that the polymers, despite the presence of ionic groups, can stabilize electrostatically stabilized aqueous GNPs which otherwise aggregate in presence of water soluble imidazolium-based ILs. Moreover, they display good efficiency in terms of steric stabilization, comparable to systems featuring the poly-vinylpyrrolidone, PVP.

Decamethylruthenocene Hydride and Hydrogen Formation at Liquid|Liquid Interfaces

The formation and the dissociation of metal hydrides are key steps within the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) pathway for photochemical water splitting, but also impacts a wide range of other catalytic, industrial, and biochemical reactions. Herein, we describe our recent work studying HER at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES), between water|1,2-dichloroethane. This is a unique platform for evaluating the kinetics/thermodynamics for metallocene hydride formation using decamethylruthenocene. In this approach, an aqueous acid serves as the proton source and is pumped across the ITIES via an externally applied potential or the use of a phase transfer catalyst. Simulated curves developed using COMSOL Multiphysics software and compared to experimental ones, indicate a modified EC′ (electrochemical–chemical) mechanism for the decamethylruthenocene hydride formation. In the proposed pathway, decamethylruthenocene hydride is metastable in 1,2-dichloroethane and persists on the time scale of the recorded cyclic voltammograms long enough to transfer to the aqueous phase where it quickly dissociates. This is evidenced through an asymmetric, ion transfer wave observed experimentally and concluded to be hydride transfer. Shake-flask experiments with head space gas sampling demonstrated that hydrogen production was observed only when the biphasic system was positively polarized, to favor proton transfer, and decamethylruthenocene was photoactivated. This approach, combining electrochemical, simulation, and chromatographic methods, brings new insight into the factors that underlie the mechanism and rates of hydride formation/dissociation at soft interfaces.

Molecular insights in aqueous systems

The unique structure and dynamics of the water hydrogen (H)-bond network enable a multitude of structures and chemical reactions in both bulk solutions and at interfaces. The underlying molecular interactions between water and dissolved electrolytes, organic molecules, and nanoscale interfaces are difficult to study and hence not fully understood, especially when it involves interactions of length scales larger than one nanometer. In this thesis, we perform second order nonlinear light scattering experiments to investigate extended hydration shells (over one nanometer) and interfacial structures of buried aqueous interfaces that surround nanodroplets. We investigate the spatial range of ion-water interactions by probing the molecular structure of the water network in dilute electrolyte solutions. We find that electrolytes induce long-range, non-ion-specific orientational order in the H-bond network of water (over distances up to 70 hydration shells or 20 nm). These modifications in the water network start at electrolyte concentrations as low as 10 micromolar. The amount of induced orientational order and the concentration at which it occurs is different between light and heavy water. We link the observed ion induced changes in the bulk H-bond network of water to ion induced surface tension anomalies that occur in the same concentration range. We also study the same interactions in solutions with higher electrolyte concentrations focusing on cations. We observe specific ion effects in both the local charge distribution and water ordering in extended hydration shells of ions. Cations with larger charge densities induce larger changes in these two observables that follow a direct Hofmeister trend. The ion-induced structural changes in the water network are strongly correlated with the viscosity B-coefficient and hydration free energy of cations. These correlations facilitate constructing a better molecular model for specific ion effects in aqueous solutions. Next, we study the nanoscale hydrophobe/water interface and related interactions by probing the molecular structure of the interface formed with amphiphilic alkanols. We find that alkanols form a fluid film at the oil nanodroplet surface. Long chain alkanols show similar molecular structures and number densities at the interface. With increasing alkanol density, interfacial water loses its initial orientational alignment. The structure of interfacial oil molecules is more distorted for shorter alkanols. This interfacial structure differs significantly from those of macroscopic planar alkanol/water and alkanol/air interfaces and charged surfactant/oil/water interface, which can be explained by the balance between dispersive and H-bonding interactions. Finally, we develop a new membrane model system: 3D-lipid monolayers with tunable molecular structure on oil nanodroplets in water. This in-situ prepared system mimics the structure of lipid droplets in cells. The interfacial structure of lipids can be tuned from a tightly packed monolayer (liquid condensed phase) to a dilute one (liquid condensed/liquid expanded coexistence phase) by varying the lipid/oil/water ratio. The tunability of the chemical structure, the high surface-to-volume ratio, and the small sample volume make this system ideal for studies of molecular interactions of lipids in membranes.
