Forum Out of what? Locating the underpinnings of theory

The Building Research & Information special issue ‘Developing Theories of the Built Environment’ (volume 36(3), 2008) explores the epistemology that underpins the creation of theory. It broadens the perspectives that typically escape the cone of vision of building studies, and thus tend to be ignored by most ‘technical’ experts in construction or urban development. This commentary raises and examines several implicit challenges that emerge from attempting to construct theory: defining the function of theory itself; what purposes it is being asked to serve; the underlying analytical basis for a theory; its intellectual coherence and the capability to connect disparate environmental, social, political and economic dimensions; and the problems associated with theory-building at the empirical level. An innovative solution might be to approach the problem from the opposite end: as data building. This would provide a fresh insight into the act of conceiving, negotiating and bringing a building artefact into being, as well as gauge the distance between the reality of practice and the aspirations of theory. Directing such a strategic focus at project level could allow for competing logics to inform decisions; for results to be teased out, normalized and assessed; and for bridging conceptual differences in the scope of analysis or the quantification of benefits. Il élargit les perspectives qui, habituellement, échappent à l'objectif des études sur la construction et qui ont donc tendance à être ignorées par la plupart des experts « techniques » en bâtiments ou en aménagement urbain. Cet article expose et examine plusieurs difficultés implicites qui émergent de la tentative d'élaboration d'une théorie: définition de la fonction de la théorie proprement dite; quels objectifs doit-elle atteindre?; base analytique sous jacente d'une théorie; sa cohérence intellectuelle et sa capacité à connecter des dimensions environnementales, sociales, politiques et économiques disparates, et, enfin, problèmes associés à l'élaboration de la théorie au niveau empirique. Une solution novatrice pourrait consister à aborder le problème sous un tout autre angle comme la constitution de données. Elle fournirait des informations nouvelles sur l'acte de concevoir, négocier et donner le jour à un artefact et à évaluer la distance entre la réalité de la pratique et les aspirations de la théorie. La gestion d'un tel point de convergence stratégique au niveau projet pourrait autoriser des logiques concurrentielles à renseigner les décisions; à décortiquer, normaliser et évaluer les résultats, et à établir le lien entre les différences conceptuelles en ce qui concerne la portée de l'analyse ou la quantification des avantages.
