Comparison of L1 and L5 Bands GNSS Signals Acquisition

Nowadays, civil Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals are available in both L1 and L5 bands. A receiver does not need to acquire independently the signals in both bands coming from a same satellite, since their carrier Doppler and code delay are closely related. Therefore, the question of which one to acquire first rises naturally. Although the common thought would tell the L1 band signals which are narrowband, an accurate comparison has never been done, and the decision is not as easy as it seems. Indeed, L5 band signals have several advantages such as stronger power, lower carrier Doppler, or a pilot channel, unlike the Global Positioning System (GPS) L1 C/A signal. The goal of this paper is therefore to compare the acquisition of L1 and L5 bands signals (GPS L1 C/A and L5, Galileo E1 and E5a/b) to determine which one is more complex and by which factor, in terms of processing time and memory, considering hardware receivers and the parallel code search. The results show that overall the L5 band signals are more complex to acquire, but it depends strongly on the conditions. The E5 signal is always more complex to acquire than E1, while the L5 signal can have a complexity close to the L1 C/A in some cases. Moreover, precise assistance providing accurate Doppler could significantly reduce the L5 complexity below the L1 complexity.

Study on the cross-correlation of GNSS signals and typical approximations

In global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers, the first signal processing stage is the acquisition, which consists in detecting the received GNSS signals and determining the associated code delay and Doppler frequency by means of correlations with a code and a carrier replicas. These codes, as part of the GNSS signal, were chosen to have very good correlation properties without considering the effect of a potential received Doppler frequency. In the literature, it is often admitted that the maximum GPS L1 C/A code cross-correlation is about −24 dB. We show that this maximum can be as high as −19.2 dB when considering a Doppler frequency in a typical range of [−5, 5] kHz. We also show the positive impact of the coherent integration time on the cross-correlation, and that even a satellite with Doppler outside the frequency search space of a receiver impacts the cross-correlation. In addition, the expression of the correlation is often provided in the continuous time domain while its implementation is typically made in the discrete domain. It is then legitimate to ask the validity of this approximation. Therefore, the purpose of this research is twofold. First, we discuss typical approximations and evaluate their regions of validity. Second, we provide characteristic values such as maximums and quantiles of the auto and cross-correlation of the GPS L1 C/A and Galileo E1 OS codes in presence of Doppler, for frequency ranges up to 50 kHz, and for different integration times.

GNSS-Based Navigation for Lunar Missions

Numerous applications, not only Earth-based, but also space-based, have strengthened the interest of the international scientific community in using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) as navigation systems for space missions that require good accuracy and low operating costs. Indeed, already used in Low Earth Orbits (LEOs), GNSS based-navigation GNSS-based navigation systems can maximize the autonomy of a spacecraft while reducing the costs of ground operations, allowing for budget-limited missions of micro- and nanosatellites. This is why GNSS is also very attractive for applications in higher Earth orbits up to the Moon, such as in Moon Transfer Orbits (MTOs). However, while GNSS receivers have already been exploited with success for LEOs, their use in higher Earth orbits above the GNSS constellation is extremely challenging, particularly on the way from the Earth to the Moon, characterized by weaker signals with wider gain variability, larger dynamic ranges resulting in higher Doppler and Doppler rates, critically lower satellite signal availability, and poorer satellite-to-user geometry. In this context, the first research objective and achievement of this PhD research is a feasibility study of GNSS as an autonomous navigation system to reach the Moon, and the determination of the requirements for the design of a code-based GNSS receiver for such a mission. The most efficient combinations of signals transmitted by the GPS, Galileo, and combined GPS-Galileo constellations have been identified by analyzing the theoretical achievable signal acquisition and tracking sensitivities, the resultant constellation availability, the pseudorange error factors, and the geometry error factor and accordingly the achievable navigation performance The results show that GNSS signals can be tracked up to Moon altitude, but not with the current GNSS receiver technology for terrestrial use. The second research objective and achievement is the design and implementation of a GNSS receiver proof-of-concept capable of providing GNSS observations onboard a space vehicle orbiting up to Moon altitude. This research work describes the hardware architecture, the high-sensitivity acquisition and tracking modules and the standalone single-epoch navigation performance of the developed GPS L1 C/A hard-ware receiver, named the WeakHEO receiver. Although they can still be collected, GNSS observations at Moon altitude, if not filtered, but simply used to compute a single-epoch least-squares solution, lead to a very coarse navigation accuracy, on the order of 1 to 10 km, depending on the number and type of signals successfully processed. Therefore, the third and main research objective and achievement is the design and implementation of a GNSS-based orbital filter (OF) determination unit, based on an extended Kalman filter (EKF) and an orbital forces model, able to significantly improve the achievable navigation performance and also to aid acquisition and tracking modules of the GNSS receiver. Simulation results of the OF performance when processing simulated GPS and Galileo observations, but also real GPS L1 C/A observations provided by the WeakHEO receiver (when connected in a hardware in the loop configuration to a full constellation GNSS radio frequency signal simulator), show a positioning accuracy at Moon altitude of a few hundred meters.

Doppler-based positioning using LEO augmented satellite constellation - Simulations of perspectives

The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) refers to a constellation of satellites emitting signals from space, used to provide Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services to the receivers on Earth. Nowadays, the GNSS is exploited in a wide range of applications among which ground mapping, transportation, machine control, timing, surveying, defense, or aerial photogrammetry [1]. However, as we become more dependent on GNSS technology, we also become more vulnerable to its limitations [2]. The GNSS operates with satellites orbiting in Medium Earth Orbits (MEO, approximately 20200 [km] in altitude). On one hand, this great distance allows to have a large footprint of the satellite signal on Earth, but on the other hand, it requires the signal to cross a wide path in the atmosphere before reaching the receiver. This results in a decrease of signal strength, which is not an issue in open-sky condition, but becomes a limitation in deep attenuation environments, with little or no service in urban canyon, in dense cities or indoors [3]. In this contribution, a possible strategy to cope with this issue is proposed and evaluated through a simulation process. It implies the use of Low Earth Orbits (LEO) satellites as a support for the GNSS PNT service. Since nowadays no broadband big LEO constellation broadcasting navigation messages exist, in this project various LEO constellation setups have been simulated and tested. Because LEOs are much closer to Earth (200 to 1500 [km]), they move faster in the sky, passing overhead in minutes instead of hours like MEOs. This gives rise to the possibility to exploit the Doppler effect to accurately locate the user. Therefore, three different PNT algorithms, employing the Kalman filter, are implemented and the evaluation of the localization quality is made at four distinct locations on the globe. The results show that, for most of the cases, compared to the standard GPS pseudorange only PNT, the addition of LEO pseudoranges already improve the localization quality. The performance of the PNT algorithm increases even more with the exploitation of both pseudoranges and pseudorangerates (Doppler) measurements. Nevertheless, the choice of constellation parameters such as satellites altitude, total number of satellites, orbit inclination or the frequency of the emitted signal, has a great impact on the magnitude of the improvement in the localization quality. The factor that has the most significant influence seems to be the signal frequency and for that reason it must be carefully chosen: the higher the better. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that at high elevation cut-off angles (denied environments), the addition of LEO constellation is a valid option and allows us to obtain an accurate position even when the GNSS only can not provide a solution. Finally, the LEO only system seems to be a promising alternative to cope with GNSS jamming or spoofing. However, the optimal LEO parameters providing an accurate solution for all the location on the globe has not yet been identified. In conclusion, the result of this effort is the awareness that, once the optimal parameters for the LEO system have been found, it is a valid option to augment the GNSS, or even as a standalone backup, especially when the Doppler-based positioning is applied. Nevertheless, we are still far from that end and much more research needs to be done.
