A Single Hydrogen Molecule as an Intensity Chopper in an Electrically Driven Plasmonic Nanocavity

Photon statistics is a powerful tool for characterizing the emission dynamics of nanoscopic systems and their photophysics. Recent advances that combine correlation spectroscopy with scanning tunneling microscopy induced luminescence (STML) have allowed the measurement of the emission dynamics from individual molecules and defects, demonstrating their nature as single-photon emitters. The application of correlation spectroscopy to the analysis of the dynamics of a well-characterized adsorbate system in an ultrahigh vacuum remained to be demonstrated. Here, we combine single-photon time correlations with STML to measure the dynamics of individual H-2 molecules between a gold tip and an Au(111) surface. An adsorbed H-2 molecule performs recurrent excursions below the tip apex. We use the fact that the presence of the H-2 molecule in the junction modifies plasmon emission to study the adsorbate dynamics. Using the H-2 molecule as a chopper for STM-induced optical emission intensity, we demonstrate bunching in the plasmonic photon train in a single measurement over 6 orders of magnitude in the time domain (from microseconds to seconds) that takes only a few seconds. Our findings illustrate the power of using photon statistics to measure the diffusion dynamics of adsorbates with STML.

Dynamics of nanoscale systems probed by time-resolved STM-induced luminescence

The efficiency and peculiarities of processes such as surface adsorption or electron-to-photon energy conversion in organic and inorganic structures are determined by the dynamics at the scale of individual molecules, atoms and charges. The timescales of such effects reach down to the ps regime, which can be routinely probed using ultrafast optics methods. However, these far-field techniques suffer from ensemble-averaging that obscures the information encoded at the atomic level. These limits can be overcome by combining scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) with time-resolved light detection so that pm and ps scales can be reached simultaneously. STM-induced luminescence (STML) methodologies are employed in this thesis to explore the nanoscale dynamics of different systems: light emitting defects in C60 thin films, H2 molecules weakly physisorbed on Au(111), metal-metal tunnel junctions and single atom contacts. First, we study the dynamics associated with the radiative decay of single excitons at defect-related emission centres localized in the C60 molecular film. Such emission centres serve as the smallest possible model of an organic light emitting diode where a single electron and hole recombine producing a photon. Using time-resolved STML (TR-STML) excited by voltage pulses, we follow the formation of an individual exciton and map this process in real space with ns resolution. Besides the excitonic emission, on C60 thin films we observe luminescence due to the radiative decay of plasmons. We study the interplay of these two processes and create a nanoscale bimodal source whose emission can be dynamically tuned by controlling the charge injection rate. A kinetic model is employed to thoroughly describe the charge and exciton dynamics in this system. The developed kinetic model can be also used to analyse the motion of hydrogen molecules adsorbed on an Au(111) crystal. The weak interaction with the metal and the continuous charge injection by the tip leads to recurrent excursions of the molecule inside and outside from the tunnelling junction, which chop the plasmonic luminescence intensity. These dynamical changes in the light intensity can be followed by correlation spectroscopy and allow extraction of the molecule's residence and excursion times. In the next step, we probe the dynamics of a generic metal-metal tunnel junction. Interestingly, when a high bias is applied, the emission from the junction exhibits photon bunching on a time scale below 50 ps as evidenced by Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry. Such a process is a result of a distribution of the energy of one electron between two photons, which may possibly be entangled. The opposite process may occur as well, under conditions where two electrons interact supplying energy to one photon. This overbias emission is a feature of single atom contacts and is used here to probe the fluctuations of plasmonic enhancement driven by the motion of single atoms in the vicinity of such a contact.

Developing luminescent Brownian probes for near-field investigations of the intracellular environment

Life sciences have a constantly growing need for novel methodological approaches suitable to investigate the intracellular environment with increased temporal and spatial resolutions. Recently, optical near-field probes, such as laser-irradiated pointed metal, uncoated/metal-coated tapered optical fibers, as well as nano-emitters, such as single molecules or nanoparticles, have attracted increasing attention as key components of high-resolution microscopes. In parallel, super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, operating in far-field regime and overcoming the light diffraction limit, has markedly improved imaging resolution. Although both near- and far-field optical approaches drastically improve image resolution, they still represent numerous drawbacks, such as, technical difficulties concerning probe preparation (near-field) or potential damaging through very high light intensities (far-field). The aforementioned shortcomings of high-resolution optical microscopy can be overcome to a great extent by photonic force microscopy (PFM). PFM employs a strongly focused near-infrared (NIR) laser light to hold a dielectric or metallic particle as a local probe. Such an optical trap enables one to ‘cage’ a mesoscopic particle and track its three-dimensional (3D) thermal fluctuations in the surrounding environment, e.g. a viscous liquid. Therefore, besides offering near-field 3D imaging, PFM reports also on other important quantities concerning local mechanical properties, including force and viscosity as well as dynamical properties of the surrounding medium. This additional information is derived from the careful analysis of the jittery motion (so-called Brownian motion) of the trapped single-particle probe that collides with thermally-activated surrounding molecules. In this thesis, we first study in detail the Brownian motion of a single spherical particle that is confined within the harmonic potential of the optical trap. To this end, we optimize the NIR light path and electronic noise floor of our custom-built PFM set-up for detecting and quantifying resonances in the Brownian motion. These resonances arise from the coupling between the hydrodynamic memory and strong strength of the optical trap. Due to the high sensitivity of the short-time dynamics, the size of the particle can be measured by simultaneous fitting of the velocity autocorrelation function and power spectral density of its thermal fluctuations. In order to choose the best-suitable spherical probe for a given experiment in PFM, computational modeling based on a Matlab toolbox is performed. The generalized Lorenz-Mie theory is computed using the T -matrix method for various experimental conditions, including changes in the size and refractive index of the sphere, as well as different laser polarization states. The axial equilibrium position is examined to predict its location compared with the position of the laser focus. Optical forces acting on the sphere are investigated in 3D to highlight, in particular, the limits of the perfectly harmonic potential assumption. These limits are quantified and discussed. Subsequently, we identify different types of inorganic nano/micro-sized particles that can be trapped by the NIR laser of the PFM and used simultaneously as mechanical and near-field light sources. To this end, we take advantage of the visible light emission from single probes confined in the optical trap and excited by the NIR laser light. The emphasis is on particles revealing nonlinear optical properties. In particular, nonlinear optical field enhancement resulting from excitation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) on trapped gold particles of 200 nm is demonstrated by measuring the emission of that second-harmonic generation (SHG). Furthermore, we show, under optical trapping conditions, SHG emission from single potassium niobate (KNbO3) nano/micro-sized particles. We also report on the multicolor upconversion luminescence (UCL), at the single particle level, for randomly shaped crystals of sodium yttrium fluoride codoped with ytterbium and erbium, NaYF4:Yb,Er (UCC), when they are held in the optical trap. In parallel, 3D Brownian fluctuations of a single trapped particle are quantified. Moreover, luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) between a KNbO3 particle or an UCC and molecules of an organic dye (rose bengal) adsorbed on their surface is highlighted and analyzed. Finally, randomly shaped UCCs and hexagonal nanoplates are characterized in detail at the single particle level. The hexagonal β phase in the polycrystalline and monocrystalline crystals is identified, in both randomly and hexagonally shaped particles by electron microscopy. UCL emission from the trapped crystal is quantified in terms of power and found to be dependent on the laser power density, size and shape of the particle as well as its orientation within the trap. Most importantly, the different colors in the UCL spectrum do not vary with the same trend for different orientations of the randomly or hexagonally shaped crystal upon trapping. This suggests the existence of crystalline anisotropy-dependent UCL. Thereby, we should be able to design the best-suited particle probe for LRET experiments with subwavelength resolution.

An Experimental Setup for Heterogeneous Catalysis on Atomically Defined Metal Nanostructures

The main objective of this PhD thesis is to link the atomic scale structure to the catalytic properties of self-assembled nanostructures. The growth and characterization of these nanostructures was carried out in an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber initially designed for the study of the kinetics of epitaxial growth of thin films and nanostructures by variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. During this PhD thesis, we built a very sensitive and selective gas detector based on a quadrupole mass spectrometer and adapted to the geometry of this UHV system. The proper functioning of the gas detector is confirmed by temperature programmed desorptions of Xe on Ag(100) which demonstrate the very high sensitivity of the device of about

10^{-6}

~monolayer (ML). The zero-order desorption parameters obtained for the first monolayer of Xe adsorbed on Ag(100) are

E_d=0.22-0.23

~eV with a prefactor

\nu_0

between

4\times10^{12}

^{-1}

and

1 \times10^{13}

^{-1}

. An exchange process between Fe adatoms and Ag atoms from the Ag(100) surface is identified by means of temperature programmed desorption of N

_2

. Desorption spectra suggest that the exchange is complete from an annealing temperature of 140~K. Our study of the catalytic activity of metal nanostructures focuses on the ability of passivated Fe clusters to adsorb N

_2

molecules without dissociating them, which is a fundamental step in the bio-inspired heterogeneous catalysis of ammonia. The first system investigated for the growth of Fe clusters is MgO/Ag(100). Diffusion of Fe adatoms deposited on a MgO monolayer is observed from an annealing temperature of 280~K onwards. Fe clusters with an average size of

12.1\pm 0.5

~atoms are obtained on a MgO monolayer by thermal ripening of 0.072~ML of Fe deposited at 40~K. No sign of N

_2

adsorption was observed on these clusters by thermal programmed desorption investigation. The second system chosen for the growth of Fe clusters is graphene/Ir(111) obtained by chemical vapor deposition. The deposition of 0.3 and 0.4 ML of Fe on a graphene/Ir(111) sample at 50~K, followed by annealing at 300~K, generates a superlattice of Fe clusters which matches the periodicity of the moiré formed by graphene/Ir(111). The theoretically expected mean cluster size is 26 atoms for 0.3~ML of Fe, and 35 atoms for 0.4~ML of Fe. The temperature stability of the clusters obtained with 0.4~ML Fe is investigated from 300~K to 600~K. It is established that Smoluchowski ripening takes place as the annealing temperature increases and the superlattice structure has completely disappeared after annealing at 600~K. Temperature programmed desorption of molecularly adsorbed N

_2

at 50~K on a sample with 0.4~ML of Fe deposited on graphene/Ir(111) reveals 3 desorption peaks at 120~K, 92~K, and 60~K. In addition, slow dissociation of nitrogen molecules at 50~K adsorbed on the higher energy adsorption sites is demonstrated.
