Lead Halide Residue as a Source of Light-Induced Reversible Defects in Hybrid Perovskite Layers and Solar Cells

Advanced characterization methods avoiding transient effects in combination with solar cell performance monitoring reveal details of reversible light-induced perovskite degradation under vacuum. A clear signature of related deep defects in at least the 1 ppm range is observed by low absorptance photocurrent spectroscopy. An efficiency drop, together with deep defects, appears after minutes-long blue illumination and disappears after 1 h or more in the dark. Systematic comparison of perovskite materials prepared by different methods indicates that this behavior is caused by the lead halide residual phase inherently present in material prepared by the two-step method. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms that lead halide when illuminated decomposes into metallic lead and mobile iodine, which diffuses into the perovskite phase, likely producing interstitial defects. Single-step preparation, as well as preventing lead halide illumination, eliminates this effect.

A-Si:H/c-Si heterojunctions: a future mainstream technology for high-efficiency crystalline silicon solar cells ?

In this contribution, we shortly review the main features of amorphous/crystalline silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells, including interface defects and requirements for high quality interfaces. We show how a process flow with a limited number of process steps leads to screen printed solar cells of 2x2cm(2) with 21.8% efficiency and of 10x10cm(2) with 20.9% efficiency (n-type FZ). We show that the devices work in high injection conditions of 3x10(15)cm(-3) at the maximum power point, a factor two higher than the base doping. Several research labs and companies can now produce large area 6 '' cells well over 20% on CZ wafers and some of the critical cost factors, such a metallization can be overcome with suitable strategies. Based on the high quality coating tools and processes developed for thin films used for flat panel display or thin film solar cell coatings, the deposition of the layers required to make SHJ cells has the potential to be performed in a controlled way at low cost. Considering the few process steps required, the high quality n-type Cz wafers that can be obtained by proper crystal growth control, SHJ technology has several assets that could make it become a widespread PV technology.

Highly transparent modulated surface textured front electrodes for high-efficiency multijunction thin-film silicon solar cells

To further increase the efficiency of multijunction thin-film silicon (TF-Si) solar cells, it is crucial for the front electrode to have a good transparency and conduction, to provide efficient light trapping for each subcell, and to ensure a suitable morphology for the growth of high-quality silicon layers. Here, we present the implementation of highly transparent modulated surface textured (MST) front electrodes as light-trapping structures in multijunction TF-Si solar cells. The MST substrates comprise a micro-textured glass, a thin layer of hydrogenated indium oxide (IOH), and a sub-micron nano-textured ZnO layer grown by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD ZnO). The bilayer IOH/LPCVD ZnO stack guarantees efficient light in-coupling and light trapping for the top amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cell while minimizing the parasitic absorption losses. The crater-shaped micro-textured glass provides both efficient light trapping in the red and infrared wavelength range and a suitable morphology for the growth of high-quality nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) layers. Thanks to the efficient light trapping for the individual subcells and suitable morphology for the growth of high-quality silicon layers, multijunction solar cells deposited on MST substrates have a higher efficiency than those on single-textured state-of-the-art LPCVD ZnO substrates. Efficiencies of 14.8% (initial) and 12.5% (stable) have been achieved for a-Si:H/nc-Si:H tandem solar cells with the MST front electrode, surpassing efficiencies obtained on state-of-the-art LPCVD ZnO, thereby highlighting the high potential of MST front electrodes for high-efficiency multijunction solar cells. Mechanosynthesis of the hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbI3: characterization and the corresponding solar cell efficiency

We present a facile mechanochemical route for the preparation of hybrid CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)) perovskite particles with the size of several hundred nanometers for high-efficiency thin-film photovoltaic devices. Powder X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrate that mechanosynthesis is a suitable strategy to produce a highly crystalline CH3NH3PbI3 material showing no detectable amounts of the starting CH3NH3I and PbI2 reagents. Thermal stability measurements based on the thermogravimetric analysis data of mechanosynthesized perovskite particles indicated that the as-ground MAPbI(3) is stable up to 300 degrees C with no detectable material loss at lower temperatures. The optical properties of newly synthesized perovskite particles were characterized by applying steady state absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, which confirmed a direct band-gap of 1.48 eV. Time resolved single photon counting measurements revealed that 70% of charges undergo recombination with a 61 ns lifetime. The solar cell devices made from mechanosynthesized perovskite particles achieved a power conversion efficiency of 9.1% when applying a one step deposition method.
