Universal Strategy of Bimetal Heterostructures as Superior Bifunctional Catalysts for Electrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract

Utilizing earth-abundant metals to design economical and efficient electrocatalysts for cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for acquiring clean hydrogen energy by the electrochemical overall water-splitting system. In this work, we reported a facile and universal strategy toward developing a suite of bimetallic heterostructures, representing as highly efficient catalysts of the HER/OER process. By hybridizing transition-metal sulfides (CoS2, NiS2, FeS2, and CuS) with highly active MoS2 nanosheets, all heterostructural catalysts achieved largely improved bifunctional activity originating from the special interfacial interaction as well as synergetic catalytic effects. As a result, the optimal CoS2@MoS2/CC and NiS2@MoS2/CC heterostructures displayed the lowest overpotentials at 10 mA cm(-2), which only required 31 and 225 mV for HER/OER, respectively. After assembling for water splitting, the electrolyzer exhibited a very small cell voltage of 1.58 V to reach 10 mA cm(-2). This result is obviously better than a lot of reported non-precious metal catalysts. Our strategy experimentally confirms the feasibility of the heterostructure to enhance the bifunctional performance of advanced electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting.

Power-to-methane via co-electrolysis of H2O and CO2: The effects of pressurized operation and internal methanation

This paper presents a model-based investigation to handle the fundamental issues for the design of co-electrolysis based power-to-methane at the levels of both the stack and system: the role of CO2 in co-electrolysis, the benefits of employing pressurized stack operation and the conditions of promoting internal methanation. Results show that the electrochemical reaction of co-electrolysis is dominated by H2O splitting while CO2 is converted via reverse water-gas shift reaction. Increasing CO2 feed fraction mainly enlarges the concentration and cathode-activation overpotentials. Internal methanation in the stack can be effectively promoted by pressurized operation under high reactant utilization with low current density and large stack cooling. For the operation of a single stack, methane fraction of dry gas at the cathode outlet can reach as high as 30 vol.% (at 30 bar and high flowrate of sweep gas), which is, unfortunately, not preferred for enhancing system efficiency due to the penalty from the pressurization of sweep gas. The number drops down to 15 vol.% (at 15 bar) to achieve the highest system efficiency (at 0.27 A/cm(2)). The internal methanation can serve as an effective internal heat source to maintain stack temperature (thus enhancing electrochemistry), particularly at a small current density. This enables the co-electrolysis based power-to-methane to.achieve higher efficiency than the steam-electrolysis based (90% vs 86% on higher heating value, or 83% vs 79% on lower heating value without heat and converter losses).

Oxygen evolution reaction catalyzed by first-row transition metal oxides: stability and mechanism

Water splitting offers the opportunity for storing solar energy and, thus, producing carbon-neutral and renewable solar fuels. The process, known as artificial photosynthesis, is limited by the electrocatalytic conversion of water into molecular oxygen. Electrocatalysts are essential for reducing energy losses and improving the efficiency of the oxygen evolution reaction. This thesis describes the catalytic properties of first-row transition metal oxides for the OER and provides new insights into the mechanism of the reaction. Decades of research have yielded various transition metal oxides as efficient electrocatalysts for the OER, yet their stability is not well established. Here, a combination of techniques was employed to investigate the stability of unary, and mixed metal oxides; electrochemical activity measurements, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The change of mass, composition, and activity metrics over time resolved the stability profiles of CoOx, CoFeOx, CoFeNiOx, NiOx, and NiFeOx. According to ICP-OES, the composition of all the five catalysts changed over time, while the CoOx and CoFeOx exhibited the most significant mass loss during an initial period of electrolysis. During a dynamic exchange of metal ions between the catalyst and the electrolyte, cobalt ions dissolve into the electrolyte, and iron from the electrolytic solution incorporates into the catalytic film. Once this dynamic exchange reaches equilibrium, the catalysts are stable. The mechanism of the OER mediated by amorphous cobalt oxyhydroxide was investigated by in situ spectroscopic and electrokinetic experiments. In situ surface-enhanced Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy supported a Co(IV)-O species at potentials before the onset of OER. The gradual transformation of the catalyst into a CoO2 concurred with the appearance of a superoxidic species. In situ SERS coupled with 18O and H/D isotope experiments provided evidence for the participation of the superoxidic species in the oxygen evolution reaction. The catalyst exhibits a Tafel slope of 60 mV/dec, a first-order dependence of the catalytic activity, and a proton-coupled electron-transfer pre-equilibrium. These findings propose a new OER mechanism, in which the rate-determining step is the release of oxygen from a Co-superoxo intermediate. Iron incorporation into the cobalt lattice enhances the catalytic activity greatly. Even though there are several studies on the OER mechanism in Co-Fe oxides, many vital questions on the role of iron, the true nature of active sites, and the oxidation states of Co and Fe remain. In situ SERS and XAS indicated the presence of Co(IV)-O species and a Fe valency higher than three at potentials prior to the oxygen evolution. An O-O- band, attributed to the superoxidic species, emerged at potentials lower than the onset of OER. In situ SERS coupled with 18O isotope experiments confirmed that both the lattice oxygen and superoxidic species participate in the oxygen evolution. The Tafel slope is about 37 mV/dec indicating that both the pre-equilibrium and rate-determining step involve a single-electron transfer. These findings support that neither the Co(III)/Co(IV) oxidation nor the O-O bond formation are controlling the rate of the reaction.

At the dawn of the 21st century, mankind is facing an important energy challenge. Future energy demand can only be met by large scale exploitation of renewable energy resources. Solar energy is abundant, with a sufficient capacity for the growing energy demand. However, it is necessary to implement renewable energy storage means. Hydrogen is considered as the energy carrier of the future. An energy economy based on hydrogen is viable only if hydrogen is produced from sustainable means. Water electrolysis is the most promising technique to produce hydrogen directly from water. Yet, the efficiency is limited and electrocatalysts are required to drive both the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. Scarce and expensive materials are currently used to drive these reactions. It is, thus, imperative that efficient Earth-abundant catalysts are developed. Nanostructuring enhances the performance of inexpensive materials for water splitting and several catalysts were studied for this goal. Chapter 2 describes the application of nanostructuring technique to the archetypical catalysts that are nickel oxides for oxygen evolution. The prepared nanoparticles show superior activity towards oxygen evolution than that of their bulk counterpart. The ultrafine size of nanoparticles synthesized allowed the exposure of a higher number of active sites. The activity for oxygen evolution was, thus, significantly enhanced. We also detailed that short conditioning of the electrode improved the performance of the evaluated materials. In chapter 3 we carefully studied nanoparticles and nanowires of nickel phosphide. The catalysts is known to be really active for hydrogen evolution. Our group suspected that this material was, also, a potential oxygen evolution catalyst. We proved, for the first time, that nickel phosphide is a remarkable oxygen evolution catalyst. Under alkaline conditions, used for oxygen evolution, we observed an in-situ formation of a core-shell heterostructure, a typical nanostructure architecture. The surface oxidation of this material allowed high oxygen evolution capabilities. We concluded that careful oxidation of nanostructured materials, as observed for nickel phosphide, is essential for the preparation of future outstanding oxygen evolution catalysts. Chapter 4 details the fabrication of direct solar-to-fuel electrode using cobalt phosphide as hydrogen evolving catalyst. Instead of using the electrical energy provided by solar energy, solar irradiation on the developed assembly allows direct hydrogen production. The careful design of the light-sensitive electrode (photocathode) is detailed. Simple incorporation of cobalt phosphide by means of photodeposition alleviates the cost of the electrode fabrication. The assembled electrode is active for hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. In the chapter 5 we sought to fabricate a 3-dimensional hydrogen evolving catalyst. This nanostructure is based on polymer brushes on a flat conducting substrate. Once the brushes are grown on the substrate, a molybdenum sulfide catalyst is then incorporated by simple soaking technique. We were able to tune the loading of the catalyst and the corresponding activity by changing the polymer properties. The height of the polymer was modified as well as its packing density. The resulting activity proved superior to similar approaches and to previous reports on carefully engineered molybdenum sulfide catalysts.
