Dealing with realistic networks, the solution of lightning electromagnetic field coupling to transmission lines is generally obtained through a Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) algorithm interfaced with an electromagnetic simulator. As well known, the stability of the FDTD scheme is determined by the Courant stability condition. In this contribution, it is shown that a second stability condition that limits the ratio between the space step and the line length appears when spatial extrapolation is used to obtain the values of the currents at the line extremities to be interfaced with a transient electromagnetic simulator. Finally, this work aims at solving the aforementioned problem by using a different approach to obtain the currents at the line extremities.

Electromagnetic pulse

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP), also referred to as a transient electromagnetic disturbance (TED), is a brief burst of electromagnetic energy. The origin of an EMP can be natural or artificial, and can occur as an electromagnetic field, as an electric field, as a magnetic field, or as a conducted electric current. Finite-difference time-domain method

'Finite-difference time-domain' (FDTD) or Yee's method (named after the Chinese American applied mathematician Kane S. Yee, born 1934) is a numerical analysis technique used for modeling computational electrodynamics (finding approximate solutions to the associated system of differential equations). Since it is a time-domain method, FDTD solutions can cover a wide frequency range with a single simulation run, and treat nonlinear material properties in a natural way.
