Spectral theoremIn mathematics, particularly linear algebra and functional analysis, a spectral theorem is a result about when a linear operator or matrix can be diagonalized (that is, represented as a diagonal matrix in some basis). This is extremely useful because computations involving a diagonalizable matrix can often be reduced to much simpler computations involving the corresponding diagonal matrix. The concept of diagonalization is relatively straightforward for operators on finite-dimensional vector spaces but requires some modification for operators on infinite-dimensional spaces.

Due to the nature of the human visual system, an image with higher acutance appears sharper even though an increase in acutance does not increase real . Historically, acutance was enhanced chemically during development of a negative (high acutance developers), or by optical means in printing (unsharp masking).
Jackknife resamplingIn statistics, the jackknife (jackknife cross-validation) is a cross-validation technique and, therefore, a form of resampling. It is especially useful for bias and variance estimation. The jackknife pre-dates other common resampling methods such as the bootstrap. Given a sample of size , a jackknife estimator can be built by aggregating the parameter estimates from each subsample of size obtained by omitting one observation. The jackknife technique was developed by Maurice Quenouille (1924–1973) from 1949 and refined in 1956.
