Extractive fermentation of ethanol using membrane distillation

Abstract

During the anaerobic batch cultivation of Kluyveromyces fragilis on a complex medium contg. glucose (100 g/L), EtOH was produced at levels resulting in the inhibition of growth and EtOH formation. Continuous extn. of the EtOH using transmembrane distn. resulted in an 87% increase in EtOH productivity, from 0.99 to 1.85 g/L-h. [on SciFinder (R)]
