Electronic Structure and Solvation of Copper and Silver Ions: A Theoretical Picture of a Model Aqueous Redox Reaction

Abstract

Electronic states and solvation of Cu and Ag aqua ions are investigated by comparing the Cu2+ + e- -> Cu+ and Ag2+ + e- -> Ag+ redox reactions using d. functional-based computational methods. The coordination no. of aq. Cu2+ is found to fluctuate between 5 and 6 and reduces to 2 for Cu+, which forms a tightly bound linear dihydrate. Redn. of Ag2+ changes the coordination no. from 5 to 4. The energetics of the oxidn. reactions is analyzed by comparing vertical ionization potentials, relaxation energies, and vertical electron affinities. The model is validated by a computation of the free energy of the full redox reaction Ag2+ + Cu+ -> Ag+ + Cu2+. Investigation of the one-electron states shows that the redox active frontier orbitals are confined to the energy gap between occupied and empty states of the pure solvent and localized on the metal ion hydration complex. The effect of solvent fluctuations on the electronic states is highlighted in a computation of the UV absorption spectrum of Cu+ and Ag+. [on SciFinder (R)]

TMDs, and that band structure effects are dominant. We present trends of the calculated parameters across the periodic table, and argue that these allow developing simple chemical intuition. Secondly, we study the occurrence of charge density wave phases and periodic lattice distortion in metallic

1T

transition metal dichalcogenides. The phonon dispersion and fermiology of representative examples with different

d

electron counts are studied as a function of doping. Two qualitatively different behaviours are found as a function of the filling of the

t_{2g}

subshell. We argue that away from half-filling, weak-coupling nesting arguments are a useful starting point for understanding, whereas closer to half-filling a strong-coupling real-space picture is more correct. Using Wannier functions, it is shown that strong metal-metal bonds are formed and that simple bond-counting arguments apply. Thirdly, the recently synthesized

1T

phase of NbSe

_2

, in monolayer form, is investigated from first principles. We find that

1T

-NbSe

_2

is unstable towards the formation of an incommensurate charge density wave phase, whose periodicity can be understood from the Fermi surface topology. We investigate different scenarios for the experimentally observed superlattice and insulating behaviour, and conclude that the star-of-David phase is the most stable commensurate charge density wave phase. We study the electronic properties of the star-of-David phase at various levels of theory and confirm its Mott insulating character, as speculated and in analogy with TaS

_2

. The Heisenberg exchange couplings are found to be ferromagnetic, which suggests a parallel with the so-called flat-band ferromagnetism in certain multiband Hubbard models. Finally, we address the possibility of the occurrence of the excitonic insulator phase in single-layer TiSe

_2

. The relative role of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in driving the charge density wave in layered and two-dimensional TiSe

_2

has been disputed and is still unresolved. We calculate the electronic structure and finite-momentum exciton spectrum from hybrid density functional theory. We find that in a certain range of parameters, excitonic effects are strong and the material is close to a pure excitonic insulator instability. A possible necessary condition for the physical realization of a pure excitonic insulator is proposed.

First-principles calculations of iodine-related point defects in CsPbI3

We present here first principles hybrid functional calculations of the atomic and electronic structure of several iodine-related point defects in CsPbI3, a material relevant for photovoltaic applications. We show that the presence of neutral interstitial I atoms or electron holes leads to the formation of di-halide dumbbells of I-2(-) (analogous to the well-known situation in alkali halides). Their formation and one-electron energies in the band gap are determined. The formation energy of the Frenkel defect pair (I vacancies and neutral interstitial I atoms) is found to be approximate to 1 eV, and as such is smaller than the band gap. We conclude that both iodine dumbbells and iodine vacancies could be, in principle, easily produced by interband optical excitation.

System-Dependent Density Based Dispersion Correction

Density functional approximations fail to provide a consistent description of weak molecular interactions arising from small electron density overlaps. A simple remedy to correct for the missing interactions is to add a posteriori an attractive energy term summed over all atom pairs in the system. The density-dependent energy correction, presented herein, is applicable to all elements of the periodic table and is easily combined with any electronic structure method, which lacks the accurate treatment of weak interactions. Dispersion coefficients are computed according to Becke and Johnson’s exchange-hole dipole moment (XDM) formalism, thereby depending on the chemical environment of an atom (density, oxidation state). The long- range ∼R-6 potential is supplemented with higher-order correction terms (∼R-8 and ∼R-10) through the universal damping function of Tang and Toennies. A genuine damping factor depending on (iterative) Hirshfeld (overlap) populations, atomic ionization energies, and two adjustable parameters specifically fitted to a given DFT functional is also introduced. The proposed correction, dDXDM, dramatically improves the performance of popular density functionals. The analysis of 30 (dispersion corrected) density functionals on 145 systems reveals that dDXDM largely reduces the errors of the parent functionals for both inter- and intramolecular interactions. With mean absolute deviations (MADs) of 0.74-0.84 kcal mol-1, PBE-dDXDM, PBE0-dDXDM, and B3LYP-dDXDM outperform the computationally more demanding and most recent functionals such as M06-2X and B2PLYP-D (MAD of 1.93 and 1.06 kcal mol-1, respectively).
