The eldest son of Patrice de MacMahon, Duke of Magenta, and Elisabeth de La Croix de Castries. MacMahon joined the Special Military School of Saint-Cyr in 1873 until 1875 (promotion of Archduke Albert). On the death of his father, he inherited the ducal title Duc de Magenta in 1893.
