Abstract

In this paper, we present a method for the numerical integration of the three-dimensional Green kernel over two triangles. This method is compared with the results obtained by other algorithms. The comparison proves the efficiency of the technique in removing the numerical singularity. Furthermore, we provide a numerical algorithm for increasing the computation accuracy without refining the finite element mesh. (c) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A posteriori error estimates for the heat equation in two space dimensions are presented. A classical discretization is used, Euler backward in time, and continuous, piecewise linear triangular finite elements in space. The error is bounded above and below by an explicit error estimator based on the residual. Numerical results are presented for uniform triangulations and constant time steps. The quality of our error estimator is discussed. An adaptive algorithm is then proposed. Successive Delaunay triangulations are generated, so that the estimated relative error is close to a preset tolerance. Again, numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of our approach. In this paper, order one finite elements together with Galerkin least-squares (GLS) methods are used for solving a three-held Stokes problem arising from the numerical study of viscoelastic hows. Stability and convergence results are established, even when the solvent viscosity is small compared to the viscosity due to the polymer chains. An iterative algorithm decoupling velocity-pressure and stress calculations is proposed. The link with the modified elastic viscous split stress (EVSS) method studied in (M. Fortin, R. Guenette, R. Pierre, Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg. 143 (1997) 79-95; R. Guenette, M. Fortin, J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech. 60 (1995) 27-52) is presented. Numerical results are in agreement with theoretical predictions, and with those presented in (M. Fortin, R. Guenette, R. Pierre, Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg. 143 (1997) 79-95). Adaptive finite elements with high aspect ratio for the computation of coalescence using a phase-field model

A multiphase-field model for the description of coalescence in a binary alloy is solved numerically using adaptive finite elements with high aspect ratio. The unknown of the multiphase-field model are the three phase fields (solid phase 1, solid phase 2, and liquid phase), a Lagrange multiplier and the concentration field. An Euler implicit scheme is used for time discretization, together with continuous, piecewise linear finite elements. At each time step, a linear system corresponding to the three phases plus the Lagrange multiplier has to be solved. Then, the linear system pertaining to concentration is solved. An adaptive finite element algorithm is proposed. In order to reduce the number of mesh vertices, the generated meshes contain elements with high aspect ratio. The refinement and coarsening criteria are based on an error indicator which has already been justified theoretically for simpler problems.
