Abstract

RoboX is a tour guide robot, designed to interact with visitors at Expo02, the Swiss National Exhibition. During five months, ten RoboXs will be in contact with people not trained to autonomous robots and will guide them throughout an exhibition about robotics. The work exposed here was dedicated to make RoboX lifelike and credible in implementing an expression generator. This generator uses the robot capacities in order to best express its internal state which is influenced by its sensor entries and the scenario of the guided tour. In order to validate our approach, a short experiment was set up in order to present results that include appreciations of people not used to robots.

A Navigation Framework for Multiple Mobile Robots and its Application at the Expo.02 Exhibition

This paper presents a navigation framework which enables multiple mobile robots to attain individual goals, coordinate their actions and work safely and reliably in a highly dynamic environment. We give an overview of the framework architecture, its layering and the subsystems reactive obstacle avoidance, local path planning, global path planning, multi-robot planning and localization. The latter receives particular attention as the localization problem is a key issue for navigation in unmodified and difficult environments. The framework permits a lightweight implementation on a fully autonomous robot. This is the result of a design effort striving for compact representations and computational efficiency. The experimental testbed was the ТRoboticsУ pavilion at the Swiss National Exhibition Expo.02 where ten fully autonomous robots were interacting with more than half a million visitors during a five-month period on 3,316 km.

Improvement over classical dynamic feedback linearization for a unicycle mobile robots is proposed. Compared to classical extension, the technique uses a higher-dimensional state extension, which allows rejecting a constant disturbance on the robot rotational axis. The proposed dynamic extension acts as a velocity scheduler that specifies, at each time instant, the ideal translational velocity that the robot should have. By using a higher-order extension, both the magnitude and the orientation of the velocity vector can be generated, which introduces robustness in the control scheme. Stability for both asymptotic convergence to a point and trajectory tracking is proven. The theoretical results are illustrated first in simulation, and then experimentally on the autonomous mobile robot are given. The theory is illustrated through both simulation and experiments obtained on an autonomous mobile robot called Fouzy III.

Design and study of mixed animal-robot societies are the fields of scientific exploration that can bring new opportunities for research into the group behavior of social animals. Our goal is to develop a Chicken Robot – an autonomous mobile robot, socially acceptable by a group of chicks and able to interact with them using appropriate communication channels. One of the basic requirements to such a robot is the safety of its motion with respect to the chicks, so it has to be endowed with an efficient real-time collision avoidance system. In this paper we present a fuzzy obstacle avoidance system that was designed for the Chicken Robot using the theory of fuzzy relation equations. This approach allows to easily check a consistency of a used rule base and provides a more systematic approach to design of fuzzy control systems comparing with the classical techniques. The experimental results demonstrate that a mobile robot equipped with the presented system is able to successfully avoid obstacles and safely navigate on an experimental arena.
