The Environmental Microbiology Laboratory (EML) at EPFL focuses on microbiology, particularly in geomicrobiology and gut microbiology. Research includes investigating microbial processes in geochemical transformations, contaminant mobility, and biogeochemical cycling. Techniques range from synchrotron-based spectroscopy to microbial community analyses and isotopic tools. The lab's multi-scale, multi-disciplinary approach aims to understand geomicrobiological processes and apply findings to bioremediation technologies and nuclear waste repository stability. Projects cover arsenic biogeochemistry, microbial iron reduction, and extracellular electron transfer in bacteria like Shewanella oneidensis.
