The Laboratory of Integrated Actors (LAI) at EPFL specializes in modeling and design optimization of rotating and linear electric motors and actuators, ranging from uW to several kW. Their research focuses on smart materials for actuators, including piezoelectric actuators generating touch sensations and high forces in a compact space. LAI also explores sensorless techniques for linear actuators and applies machine learning for haptic feedback generation. Additionally, they work on dielectric elastomer actuators, developing ultra-high voltage power supplies for artificial muscles. The lab's expertise lies in electromagnetism, with applications in contactless power transmission and radio frequency solutions for access control.
