Optical Excitation of a Nanoparticle Cu/p-NiO Photocathode Improves Reaction Selectivity for CO2 Reduction in Aqueous Electrolytes

We report the light-induced modification of catalytic selectivity for photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction in aqueous media using copper (Cu) nanoparticles dispersed onto p-type nickel oxide (p-NiO) photocathodes. Optical excitation of Cu nanoparticles generates hot electrons available for driving CO2 reduction on the Cu surface, while charge separation is accomplished by hot-hole injection from the Cu nanoparticles into the underlying p-NiO support. Photoelectrochemical studies demonstrate that optical excitation of plasmonic Cu/p-NiO photocathodes imparts increased selectivity for CO2 reduction over hydrogen evolution in aqueous electrolytes. Specifically, we observed that plasmon-driven CO2 reduction increased the production of carbon monoxide and formate, while simultaneously reducing the evolution of hydrogen. Our results demonstrate an optical route toward steering the selectivity of artificial photosynthetic systems with plasmon-driven photocathodes for photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction in aqueous media.

Thermally reconfigurable metalens

Reconfigurable metalenses are compact optical components composed by arrays of meta-atoms that offer unique opportunities for advanced optical systems, from microscopy to augmented reality platforms. Although poorly explored in the context of reconfigurable metalenses, thermo-optical effects in resonant silicon nanoresonators have recently emerged as a viable strategy to realize tunable meta-atoms. In this work, we report the proof-of-concept design of an ultrathin (300 nm thick) and thermo-optically reconfigurable silicon metalens operating at a fixed, visible wavelength (632 nm). Importantly, we demonstrate continuous, linear modulation of the focal-length up to 21% (from 165 mu m at 20 degrees C to 135 mu m at 260 degrees C). Operating under right-circularly polarized light, our metalens exhibits an average conversion efficiency of 26%, close to mechanically modulated devices, and has a diffraction-limited performance. Overall, we envision that, combined with machine-learning algorithms for further optimization of the meta-atoms, thermally reconfigurable metalenses with improved performance will be possible. Also, the generality of this approach could offer inspiration for the realization of active metasurfaces with other emerging materials within field of thermo-nanophotonics.

Plasmon-induced near-infrared fluorescence enhancement of single-walled carbon nanotubes

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) emit near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence that is ideal for optical sensing. However, the low quantum yields diminish the sensor’s signal-to-noise ratio and limits the penetration depths for in vivo measurements. In this study, we perform a systematic investigation of the plasmonic effects of Ag and Au nanoparticles of various geometries to tune and even enhance the fluorescence intensity of single-stranded DNA-wrapped SWCNTs (ssDNA-SWCNTs). We observe a chirality-dependent NIR fluorescence enhancement that varies with both nanoparticle shape and material, with Au nanorods increasing (7, 5) and (7, 6) chirality emissions by 80% and 60% and Ag nanotriangles increasing (7, 5) and (6, 5) emissions by 200% and 240%, respectively. The chirality-dependent enhancement was modeled using finite element modeling (FEM), which confirms contributions not only from a plasmon-induced localized increase in electron density but also from the radiative recombination of dark exciton states from the resulting electromagnetic field. Finally, we demonstrate the application of these nanoparticles in enhancing the single-molecule fluorescence of individual SWCNTs imaged in a custom-built confocal setup. The plasmonically coupled sensors show four orders of magnitude greater sensitivity towards ferricyanide, a model analyte, compared to the non-coupled sensors. Plasmonic nanoparticles thus provide a tunable means of modulating SWCNT fluorescence to study fundamental transitions of otherwise forbidden states and to improve the optical sensing performance.
