The Environmental Toxicology Laboratory at EPFL focuses on protecting aquatic ecosystems by studying the effects of chemicals and stressors on aquatic animals. They investigate the uptake, distribution, and elimination of chemicals in organisms, linking pollutant concentrations to biological effects. Research projects include ecotoxicology of engineered nanoparticles, systems biology, and developing alternatives to animal testing for fish toxicity assessment. The lab also works on understanding the toxic mechanisms at a molecular level and anchoring molecular changes to functional changes at organism and population levels. Additionally, they are involved in risk assessment of transformation products and developing mechanistic effect models for ecological risk assessment of chemicals.
