Volkan Cevher

Volkan Cevher received the B.Sc. (valedictorian) in electrical engineering from Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, in 1999 and the Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA in 2005. He was a Research Scientist with the University of Maryland, College Park from 2006-2007 and also with Rice University in Houston, TX, from 2008-2009. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne and a Faculty Fellow in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rice University. His research interests include machine learning, signal processing theory, optimization theory and methods, and information theory. Dr. Cevher is an ELLIS fellow and was the recipient of the Google Faculty Research award in 2018, the IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award in 2016, a Best Paper Award at CAMSAP in 2015, a Best Paper Award at SPARS in 2009, and an ERC CG in 2016 as well as an ERC StG in 2011.

Claudia Rebeca Binder Signer

Née à Montréal, Claudia R. Binder est d’origine canadienne, suisse et colombienne. Elle grandit entre la Suisse et la Colombie. Alumni de l’ETH de Zurich, elle y obtient un diplôme en biochimie et un doctorat en Sciences de l'environnement, de 1985 à 1996. Elle poursuit sa carrière avec un post doctorat à l'Université du Maryland, aux États-Unis, de 1996 à 1998, et travaille en qualité d’assistante-senior à l’ETH jusqu’en 2006, où elle se spécialise dans les systèmes humains-environnementaux. Elle est ensuite nommée Professeure assistante au Département de géographie de l'Université de Zurich, un poste qu’elle occupe jusqu’en 2009. Elle obtient en 2009 le titre de Professeure ordinaire en Sciences systémiques à l’Université de Graz, en Autriche et rejoint en 2011 le Département de Géographie de l’Université de Munich, en Allemagne, en tant que Professeure ordinaire en relations humaines-environnementales. Elle intègre l’EPFL en mars 2016, où elle ouvre le Laboratoire de relations humaines-environnementales dans les systèmes urbains (HERUS), rattaché à la Chaire La Mobilière pour l’écologie urbaine et un mode de vie durable, au sein de la Faculté de l’environnement naturel, architectural et construit (ENAC). Ses recherches portent sur l'analyse, la modélisation et l'évaluation de la transition des systèmes urbains vers la durabilité. Elle examine en particulier comment nous pouvons mieux comprendre la dynamique du métabolisme urbain, ce qui caractérise une ville durable et ce qui anime et entrave les processus de transformation. Elle explore ces sujets en combinant les domaines des sciences sociales, des sciences naturelles et de la science des données. Ses recherches portent sur l'alimentation, l'énergie, les modes de vie et les transports durables dans les systèmes urbains. En Suisse, Binder a été nommé membre du Conseil de la recherche, Division des programmes du Fonds national suisse (FNS) en 2016 et fait partie du Comité directeur du Programme national de recherche 71 du FNS, "Gestion de la consommation d'énergie" et du Swiss Competence Centers for Energy Research (SCCER). Elle est également membre du comité directeur sur Sustainability Research des Académies suisses des sciences et des lettres. En 2019, elle a été élue membre du Conseil universitaire de l'Université de Munich (LMU). A l’EPFL, Claudia R. Binder est la directrice académique du programme d’enseignement interdisciplinaire «Projeter Ensemble». Elle a été nommée membre de la Direction du Centre de l'énergie en 2018 et dirige depuis 2019 le groupe de travail sur la Stratégie énergétique et de durabilité de l’école.

Erwan Morellec

ERWAN MORELLEC is Swiss Finance Institute Professor and Professor of Finance at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. He is also the Head of the SFI Léman Centre, the Head of the SFI nation-wide PhD Program, and a CEPR Research Fellow. Formerly on the faculties of the Simon School of Business of the University of Rochester (USA) and HEC Lausanne (Switzerland), he holds a Ph.D. in Finance from HEC Paris. Professor Morellec is most active in the areas of corporate finance and banking and has taught several courses on these subjects to undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral students. His recent research examines the effects of prudential regulation on banks' insolvency risk or the effects of financial market imperfections on corporate investment, financing, and risk management decisions. His research has been presented at major academic conferences and seminar series around the world and is published in top rated academic journals such as the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Review of Financial Studies, and the Journal of Economic Theory. He has received several research and teaching awards.

Nico de Rooij

Nico de Rooij is Professor Emeritus of EPFL and previous Vice-President of CSEM SA. He was Professor of Microengineering at EPFL and Head of the Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems Laboratory ( SAMLAB ) from 2009 to 2016. At CSEM SA he was responsible for the EPFL CSEM coordination from 2012 to 2016. His research activities include the design, micro fabrication and application of miniaturized silicon based sensors, actuators, and microsystems. He authored and coauthored over 400 published journal papers in these areas. He was Professor at the University of Neuchatel and Head of the Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems Laboratory (SAMLAB) from 1982 to 2008. Since October 1990 till October 1996 and again from October 2002 until June 2008, he has been the director of the Institute of Microtechnology of the University of Neuchatel (IMT UniNE). He lectured at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (ETHZ), and since 1989, he has been a part-time professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL). He has been appointed Vice-President of the CSEM SA in February 2008 and headed the newly created Microsystems Technology Division of CSEM SA, from 2008 until 2012. He was Director of EPFL's Institute of Microengineering (EPFL STI IMT) from 2009 to 2012, following the transfer of IMT Uni-NE to EPFL. Dr. de Rooij is a Fellow of the IEEE and Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK). He recieved the IEEE Jun-Ichi Nishizawa Gold Medal , the Schlumberger Prize as well as the MNE Fellow Award 2016 . He was awarded a Visiting Investigatorship Program (VIP) in MEMS/NEMS Systems by the A*STAR Science and Engineering Council (SERC) , Singapore, hosted by SIMTech , for the period 2005-2008. Prof. de Rooij is Corresponding Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and Individual Member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences . He has been serving on the Editorial Boards of the IEEE/ASME Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems (IEEE JMEMS) , the IEEE proceedings , the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering, JM & M, , the Sensors and Actuators ,and Sensors and Materials . He was Member of the Information and Communication technology jury of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards from 2009 to 2012. Dr. de Rooij is (or was) Member of numerous international steering committees of conference series as well as technical paper review panels including the steering committee of the International Conference on Solid-State Sensors and Actuators and of Eurosensors. He acted as European Program Chairman of Transducers '87 and General Chairman of Transducers '89, Montreux, Switzerland. He has supervised more than 70 Ph.D. students, who have successfully completed their Ph.D. thesis. He received his M.Sc. degree in physical chemistry from the State University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, in 1975, and a Ph.D. degree from Twente University of Technology, The Netherlands, in 1978. From 1978 to 1982, he worked at the Research and Development Department of Cordis Europa N.V., The Netherlands.
