Paolo De Los Rios

Paolo De Los Rios earned his master in Electronic Engineering at the Turin Institute of Technology (Politecnico di Torino) in May 1993. In November 1993 he moved to Trieste, Italy, to enter the PhD program in Theoretical Condensed Matter Theory at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA/ISAS) where he obtained the PhD degree in October 1996 for his work on the statistical physics of disordered systems. After a one year postdoc at the Max-Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden, Germany, in November 1997 he moved to the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, to join the group of Prof. Yi-Cheng Zhang. There he has worked on various applications of statistical physics to complex systems. In September 2000 he has been appointed Assistant Professor in Statistical Physics of Living Matter and Complex Systems at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Since April 2010 he is Associate Professor at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland.

Jessen Page

Jessen Page was born in Dubai (UAE) in 1975. After attending school in Bulle (Switzerland) he studied physics for two years at the University of Konstanz, Germany, before joining the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. He graduated in June 2002 and joined the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory 4 months later. He has been working on the EU funded SUNtool project since its launching in January 2003.

Dominique de Werra

Né en1942, Dominique de Werra est ingénieur-physicien et docteur ès sciences techniques de l'EPFL. De 1969 à 1971, il a été professeur au département de sciences du management à l'Université de Waterloo (Canada); il a été professeur invité dans diverses Hautes Ecoles européennes (dont le CNAM et lENSTA) et américaines. Entre 1971 et 2007, il a été professeur de recherche opérationnelle à l'EPFL. Il a été vice-président de cette institution et directeur de la formation de 1990 à 2000. Il a ensuite été doyen des relations internationales. Ses recherches portent sur les mathématiques discrètes (optimisation combinatoire, théorie des graphes, algorithmique, etc.) et leurs applications aux systèmes industriels et informatiques en particulier en productique, distributique, énergétique et ordonnancement. Il a été membre du Conseil dOrientation Stratégique des Ecoles des Mines entre 2001 et 2007.Il a dautre part fait partie de divers comités dévaluation et daccréditation des universités en Europe et en Amérique. En 1987-1988, il a présidé l'association EURO qui regroupe les sociétés nationales de recherche opérationnelle en Europe et de 2010 à 2012 la Fédération IFORS qui est lorganisme faîtier au niveau mondial. Il est docteur h.c. de l'Université de Paris, de l'Ecole polytechnique de Poznan (Pologne), de lUniversité de Fribourg et lauréat de la médaille d'or européenne (EURO) de recherche opérationnelle en 1995 ainsi que de la EURO Distinguished Service Medal en 2012. Il est éditeur associé de divers journaux dont en particulier Discrete Applied Mathematics, Discrete Optimization.

Michael Christoph Gastpar

Michael Gastpar is a (full) Professor at EPFL. From 2003 to 2011, he was a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, earning his tenure in 2008. He received his Dipl. El.-Ing. degree from ETH Zürich, Switzerland, in 1997 and his MS degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL, USA, in 1999. He defended his doctoral thesis at EPFL on Santa Claus day, 2002. He was also a (full) Professor at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. His research interests are in network information theory and related coding and signal processing techniques, with applications to sensor networks and neuroscience. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. He is the co-recipient of the 2013 Communications Society & Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award. He was an Information Theory Society Distinguished Lecturer (2009-2011). He won an ERC Starting Grant in 2010, an Okawa Foundation Research Grant in 2008, an NSF CAREER award in 2004, and the 2002 EPFL Best Thesis Award. He has served as an Associate Editor for Shannon Theory for the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory (2008-11), and as Technical Program Committee Co-Chair for the 2010 International Symposium on Information Theory, Austin, TX.

Olivier Burdet

Né en 1960, Olivier Burdet a reçu son diplôme en génie civil de l'EPFL en 1983. Après quelques années dans la pratique, il a fait une thèse de doctorat à l'Université du Texas à Austin, qu'il a terminée en 1990. De retour à l'EPFL depuis 1990, il est acutellement adjoint scientifique et chargé de cours dans le domaine des structures, en béton en particulier. Il est très engagé dans l'enseignement sur Internet.

Since 2017 Member of the Scientific Committe of the CAS Thèmes et Echelles de l’Urbanisme, in the frame of the MAS-Continuing Education in Urbanism, EPFL - University of Geneva. Related to these activities, are other roles in the academy: Member of the Library Commission at the EPFL (since 2013) Member of the Research Commission at the ENAC Faculty (2009-1015), Member and/or President of the PhD final exam and Phd admission exam juries for the Doctoral Schools of University of Venice, KU Leuven, Université de Grenoble, Université de Louvain-La-Neuve and EPFL. APPROVED RESEARCH PROJECTS I have a 20 years of experience in interdisciplinary research projects, involving principally the domains of architecture, landscape, environmental engineers, and sociology. My most important research experience relates to the SNF Sinergia "Post-car world. A trans-disciplinary multi-dimensional Simulation" as Partner Leader (Main Leader: Prof. Jacques Lévy), and as Main Leader of the Sub-Project C: "Urbanity. Configuring a Post-Car world" (2013-2017). Others projects to be mentioned: "Urban gardening and human wellbeing in the greater Lausanne area" (Partner leader; ENAC Exploratory Grant 2016-17) ; "Territory in the Crisis" (Partner leader; Compagnia di San Paolo 2013-15) ; "1 km Well-being. The Urban Landscape Observatory" (Partner leader; Swiss cooperation project in architecture, CEPF and CUS Funding 2009-2011); "Résistance et projet. TEACHNING ACTIVITIES I am currently teaching in the following fields: History and Theory of urbanism, Theory of contemporary landscape and urban design, Cultural representation of nature, Interdisciplinary issues in Urban and Land Planning. My present classes at EPFL are: Theories of Urbanism I and II (bachelor); UE J Territory and Landscape (master seminar). After being responsible of interdisciplinary education in ENAC-EPFL (Cours ENAC, 2006-08; ENAC Week, 2004-17), I have been increasingly involved in Post graduate education. Namely, I am member of the Board of the CAS Thèmes et Echelles de l’Urbanisme, in the frame of MAS Continuing Education in Urbanism EPFL-UNIGE (Since 2018), after being co-responsible of PhD class Concepts and Theory 1 (EDAR-EPFL 2014-2017). Recently I chaired the Scientific committee of the Doctoral Seminar Comparing habitat in the frame of swissuniversities (2017) and co-coordinated the International Masterclass Territories in the crisis (EPFL-Polytchnique of Turin-University of Venise, 2016).
