Nicolas MacrisNicolas Macris received the PhD degree in theoretical physics from EPFL and then pursued his scientific activity at the mathematics department of Rutgers University (NJ, USA). He then joined the Faculty of Basic Science of EPFL, working in the field of quantum statistical mechanics and mathematical aspects of the quantum Hall effect. Since 2005 he is with the Communication Theories Laboratory and Information Processing group of the School of Communication and Computer Science and currently works at the interface of statistical mechanics, information theory and error correcting codes, inference and learning theory. He held long-term visiting appointments and collaborations with the University College and the Institute of Advanced studies in Dublin, the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, the Centre de Physique Theorique Luminy Marseille, Paris XI Orsay, the ETH Zürich and more recently Los Alamos National Lab. Vincenzo SavonaDe nationalité italienne, Vincenzo Savona est né en 1969. Il effectue ses études de physique à lEcole normale supérieure de Pise et à lUniversité de Pise. Puis il entreprend une thèse de doctorat à lInstitut de physique théorique de lEPFL. Il effectue des recherches post-doctorales à lEPFL, puis à lInstitut de physique de lUniversité Humboldt de Berlin. En 2002, il revient à lEPFL pour y constituer son groupe de recherche, bénéficiant dun subside «professeur boursier» du Fonds national suisse de la recherche scientifique. En 2006, il est nommé professeur assistant tenure-track à lEPFL et intègre le NCCR de photonique quantique. En 2010 il est nommé professeur associé. Actuellement, il dirige le Laboratoire de physique théorique des nanosystèmes.
John MaddocksCitoyen de Grande Bretagne, John Maddocks est né en 1958. Il a obtenu un diplôme en mathématiques en 1978, à l'Université de Glasgow (Ecosse), ainsi qu'un doctorat à l'Université d'Oxford (Angleterre) en 1981. Sa thèse concernait la bifurcation et l'échange de stabilité dans les principes variationnels contraints qui apparaissent en théorie de l'élasticité. Il a ensuite effectué des travaux de recherche à l'Université de Stanford (USA), puis à Oxford, avant de rejoindre l'Université du Maryland (USA) en 1984. Il y est nommé professeur associé en 1989, puis professeur ordinaire en 1993. Il a notamment été chercheur invité à l'Université du Minnesota, du Texas, de Heriot-Watt, d'Oxford, à l'Institut Courant à New York et à l'École polytechnique fédérale de Zurich.
Ses travaux de recherche concernent principalement l'analyse et les techniques computationnelles en mécanique non linéaires.Il a effectué des travaux interdisciplinaires faisant intervenir différents domaines, tels la robotique, la dynamique des satellites et l'étude de macromolécules comme l'ADN. Il est spécialiste de la théorie de la stabilité des systèmes hamiltoniens et des phénomènes de bifurcation dans les problèmes de calcul des variations paramétrés. Plus récemment, il a mis au point des outils de calcul scientifique interactifs qui utilisent des techniques de visualisation avancées.
En juin 1997, il est nommé professeur ordinaire en analyse appliquée, au Département de mathématiques. Il enseigne en particulier l'analyse et des cours plus spécialisés aux ingénieurs et ingénieurs mathématiciens. Il continuera à effectuer des travaux de recherche en mécanique du continu, en techniques de visualisation, en analyse et en calcul scientifique.
Jan Sickmann HesthavenProf. Hesthaven received an M.Sc. in computational physics from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in August 1991. During the studies, the last 6 months of 1989 was spend at JET, the european fusion laboratory in Culham, UK. Following graduation, he was awarded a 3 year fellowship to begin work towards a Ph.D. at Riso National Laboratory in the Department of Optics and Fluid Dynamics. During the 3 years of study, the academic year of 1993-1994 was spend in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University and three 3 months during the summer of 1994 in Department of Mathematics and Statistics at University of New Mexico. In August 1995, he recieved a Ph.D. in Numerical Analysis from the Institute of Mathematical Modelling (DTU). Following graduation in August 1995, he was awarded an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Advanced Scientific Computing and was approinted Visiting Assistant Professor in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. In December of 1996, he was appointed consultant to the Institute of Computer Applications in Science and Engineering(ICASE) at NASA Langley Research Center (NASA LaRC). As of July 1999, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics, in September 2000 he was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, as of July 2001 he was awarded a Manning Assistant Professorship, and in March 2002, he was awarded an NSF Career Award. In January 2003, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics with tenure and in May 2004 he was awarded Philip J. Bray Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Sciences (the highest award given for teaching excellence in all sciences at Brown University). He was promoted to Professor of Applied Mathematics as of July 2005. From October 2006 to June 2013, he was the Founding Director of the Center for Computation and Visualization (CCV) at Brown University. As of October 2007, he holds the (honorary) title of Professor (Adjunct) at the Technical University of Denmark. In November 2009, he successfully defended his dr.techn thesis at the Technical University of Denmark and was rewarded the degree of Doctor Technices -- the highest academic distinction awarded based on ... substantial and lasting contributions that has helped to move the research area forward and penetrated into applications. As grant Co-PI he served from Aug 2010 to June 2013 as Deputy Director of the Institute of Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), the newest NSF Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. After having spend his entire academic career at Brown University, Prof Hesthaven decided to pursue new challenges and joined the Mathematics Institute of Computational Science and Engineering (MATHICSE) at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland in July 2013. In March 2014 he was elected SIAM Fellow for contributions to high-order methods for partial differential equations.
