A virtual community is a social network of individuals who connect through specific social media, potentially crossing geographical and political boundaries in order to pursue mutual interests or goals. Some of the most pervasive virtual communities are online communities operating under social networking services. Howard Rheingold discussed virtual communities in his book, The Virtual Community, published in 1993. The book's discussion ranges from Rheingold's adventures on The WELL, computer-mediated communication, social groups and information science. Technologies cited include Usenet, MUDs (Multi-User Dungeon) and their derivatives MUSHes and MOOs, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), chat rooms and electronic mailing lists. Rheingold also points out the potential benefits for personal psychological well-being, as well as for society at large, of belonging to a virtual community. Coherent rendering of virtual smile previews with fast neural style transfer

Coherent rendering in augmented reality deals with synthesizing virtual content that seamlessly blends in with the real content. Unfortunately, capturing or modeling every real aspect in the virtual rendering process is often unfeasible or too expensive. We present a post-processing method that improves the look of rendered overlays in a dental virtual try-on application. We combine the original frame and the default rendered frame in an autoencoder neural network in order to obtain a more natural output, inspired by artistic style transfer research. Specifically, we apply the original frame as style on the rendered frame as content, repeating the process with each new pair of frames. Our method requires only a single forward pass, our shallow architecture ensures fast execution, and our internal feedback loop inherently enforces temporal consistency.

A Document Reuse Tool for Communities of Practice

Virtual communities of practice are gaining importance as mean of sharing and exchanging knowledge. In such environments, information reuse is of major concern. In this paper, we outline the importance of structuring documents in order to facilitate the reuse of their content. We show how explicit structure representation facilitates the understanding of the original documents and helps considerably in automating the reuse process. We propose two main tools: the first performs automatic structure transformation using matching techniques and the second performs structure and instances evolution in a transparent and an automatic manner.

The amount of multimedia content available online constantly increases, and this leads to problems for users who search for content or similar communities. Users in Flickr often self-organize in user communities through Flickr Groups. These groups are particularly interesting as they are a natural instantiation of the content~+~relations social media paradigm. We propose a novel approach to group searching through hypergroup discovery. Starting from roughly 11,000 Flickr groups' content and membership information, we create three different bag-of-word representations for groups, on which we learn probabilistic topic models. Finally, we cast the hypergroup discovery as a clustering problem that is solved via probabilistic affinity propagation. We show that hypergroups so found are generally consistent and can be described through topic-based and similarity-based measures. Our proposed solution could be relatively easy implemented as an application to enrich Flickr's traditional group search.
