Dissociatives, colloquially dissos, are a subclass of hallucinogens which distort perception of sight and sound and produce feelings of detachment – dissociation – from the environment and/or self. Although many kinds of drugs are capable of such action, dissociatives are unique in that they do so in such a way that they produce hallucinogenic effects, which may include dissociation, a general decrease in sensory experience, hallucinations, dream-like states or anesthesia. Despite most dissociatives’ main mechanism of action being tied to NMDA receptor antagonism, some of these substances, which are nonselective in action and affect the dopamine and/or opioid systems, may be capable of inducing more direct and repeatable euphoria or symptoms which are more akin to the effects of typical “hard drugs” or common drugs of abuse. “Europolis”, un monument schizophrène pour l'Europe

Comme tous monuments, “Europolis” est avant tout un objet permettant de souligner un instant d'histoire, dans son cas, la sortie du Royaume-Uni de l'Union européenne. Située dans l'enceinte même de la gare St-Pancras, réelle porte londonienne vers l'Europe, ce grand complexe a pour but premier d'engendrer une enclave internationale au centre de la métropole. Cette machine programmatique s'inscrit dans un contexte urbain complexe (voire chaotique) où le style victorien se mêle au high-tech et l'architecture industrielle au postiche, le tout de manière étonnamment plaisante. De par sa taille cette zone franche est une ville dans la ville: «La Tour rejoint finalement la fonction essentielle des grands lieux humains: l'autarcie; la Tour peut vivre sur elle-même: on peut y rêver, y manger, observer, y comprendre, s'y étonner, y faire des achats; comme un bateau (autre objet mythique qui fait rêver les enfants), on peut s'y sentir coupé du monde et cependant propriétaire d'un monde.» [Barthes, Rolland, La tour Eiffel] N.B.: Ce travail fut précédé d'une analyse, qui visait à interpréter diverses pathologies liées au domaine de la psychiatrie à travers un catalogue regroupant huitante bâtiments. On y trouvait notamment des signes de délire de mémoire, de dissociation et même parfois l'étrange sentiment de faire face à une hallucination. “Europolis” comporte les troubles permettant de le définir comme schizophrène.

Controversy exists regarding the site where anesthetics act in the brain to produce sedation and unconsciousness. Actions in the cerebral cortex and thalamus are likely, although the relative importance of each site is unclear. We used in computo modeling to investigate the sensitivity of cortical and thalamic neurons to midazolam (MDZ) at concentrations that produce unconsciousness. The GABA(A) receptor conductance of the model was manipulated to simulate the effects of MDZ at free-drug plasma concentrations ranging from 8 nM to 100 nM; sleepiness to complete unconsciousness occurs in humans in the 10-40 nM range. Prolongation of phasic inhibition was simulated by increasing the decay time constant and tonic inhibition was simulated by introducing a tonic current; the extent of phasic and tonic inhibition was appropriate for each simulated MDZ concentration. Phasic and tonic inhibition was simulated in cortex, and phasic inhibition was simulated in thalamus. Simulation of MDZ effect decreased cortical neuronal firing rate.
