Maud EhrmannMaud Ehrmann is a research scientist at EPFL’s Digital Humanities Laboratory lead by Prof.
Frédéric Kaplan
. She holds a PhD in Computational Linguistics from the Paris Diderot Universtiy (Paris 7) and has been engaged in a large number of scientific projects centred on information extraction and text analysis, both for present-time and historical documents. Her main research interests span Natural Language Processing and Digital Humanities and include, among others, historical text annotation, historical data processing and representation, named entity recognition, and multilingual linguistic resources creation.
Her current work at the DHLAB focuses on
‘impresso - Media Monitoring of the Past’
, a SNF sinergia project she initiated with
Marten Düring

) and which aims at enabling critical analysis of historical newspapers. In addition to the overall project management, her contributions to this project include system design and data management, annotation and benchmarking and named entity processing. , working particularly on information extraction and knowledge representation tasks. Previously, she worked on the
Garzoni
project where she supervised and contributed to the development of a web-based transcription and annotation interface - in collaboration with Orlin Topalov, and built a linked data-based historical knowledge base. She also contributed to the

Prior to joining the DHLAB, she worked at the

at the Sapienza University of Rome with Roberto Navigli, where she worked on the
BabelNet
resource - a very large multilingual encyclopaedic dictionary and semantic network - and contributed to the

project. Before that, she has been working for four years at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, as member of the OPTIMA unit (now

Isabella Di LenardoPh.D. in Theories and Art History. Isabella di Lenardo is senior scientist in Digital Humanities and Urban History. Her research activity is focused on digital tools and methods applied to Urban History. She is an expert in ancient cartography, city representations, cadastral sources interpreted through digital modeling, extraction and analysis systems.She's also interested in network analysis questioning the production and circulation of artistic and architectural knowledge in Europe XVIth – XVIIIth centuries in particular on North-South relationships and influences. The development of collaboration projects with European institutions and the activity carried out on various initiatives supported by the European Commission have allowed her to acquire specialism in the field of science applied to heritage, developing in particular specific skills for the enhancement of Cultural Heritage through digital tools. She leads projects in collaboration with Bibliothèque national de France (Paris), Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (Paris), Ecole nationale des chartes (Paris), Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, Centre Allemand d’Histoire de l’Art (Paris), Musée du Louvre, Archives Nationales de Paris, Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris, Réunion des Musées Nationaux. She supervised all the urban modeling simulations for the Venice Time Machine project and acted as content curator for all the exhibitions (Venice Biennale, Grand Palais-Paris, Datasquare - ArtLab-Lausanne, Museo Correr-Venice). Head of “Replica” project : digitizing 1 million photos of artworks in the Fondazione Giorgio Cini (Venice) and visual patterns extraction through a search engine for visual similarities. She has a Ph.D in Art History and also studied Archaeology and Urban Studies. She has published essays and articles about Venetian Art and Urban History and participated in many Art exhibitions in European museums. She coordinated summer schools and workshops about Digital Tools for Art History and Urban History. She attended conferences on digital methods for History in universities and patrimonial institutions.
Yuchen YangYuchen is working on the SNF Sinergia interdisciplinary project
"Narratives from the long tail: transforming access to audiovisual archives"
under the supervision of Prof. Sarah Kenderdine at Laboratory for Experimental Museology.
His research interests include Machine Learning on Heterogeneous Data, Knowledge Representation and Semantics, Audiovisual Narrative, Digital Curation, and HCI. He is especially interested in their application in the cultural and heritage sector in pursuit of the future for memory institutions.
Before joining EPFL, Yuchen worked for Mckinsey & Company, NLP start-up Eigen Technologies, and Alibaba Group in various roles, with a focus on digital transformation and utilising unstructured data.
Giorgio MargaritondoDe nationalité américaine et suisse, Giorgio Margaritondo est né à Rome (Italie) en 1946. Il a reçu la Laurea cum laude en physique de l'Université de Rome en 1969. De 1969 à 1978, il a travaillé pour le Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), à Rome, à Frascati et, pendant la période 1975-1977, chez Bell Laboratories aux Etats-Unis. De 1978 à 1990, il est professeur de physique à l'Université du Wisconsin, à Madison (Etats-Unis); en 1984, il est nommé vice-directeur au Centre de rayonnement synchrotron de la même université. En 1990, il est engagé à l'EPFL comme professeur ordinaire et dirige l'Institut de physique appliquée au Département de physique. Il a été également membre honoraire du corps professoral de l'Université Vanderbilt à Nashville. En 2001 il a été nommé doyen de la Faculté des sciences de base de l'EPFL; en 2004, il a été nommé Vice-président pour les affaires académiques.; en 2010 et jusqu'à sa retraite de l'EPFL en 2016 il est devenu Doyen de la formation continue. A côté de ses cours de physique générale, son activité de recherche porte sur la physique des semiconducteurs et des supraconducteurs (états électroniques, surfaces, interfaces) et des systèmes biologiques; ses principales méthodes expérimentales sont la spectroscopie et la spectromicroscopie électroniques, l'imagerie aux rayons x et la microscopie SNOM, y compris les expériences avec le rayonnement synchrotron et le laser à électrons libres. Auteur d'environ 700 articles scientifiques et de 9 livres, il a aussi été responsable de 1995 à 1998 des programmes scientifiques du Synchrotron ELETTRA à Trieste. Depuis 1997, il a été le coordinateur de la table ronde de la Commission européenne pour le rayonnement synchrotron, et président du conseil de la "Integrated Initiative" de la Commission européenne pour les synchrotrons et les lasers à électrons libres (IA-SFS, ensuite ELISA), le plus grand réseau au monde de laboratoires dans ce domaine. En 2011-2015, il a été Editor-in-Chief du Journal of Physics D (Applied Physics). A présent, il est vice-président du conseil de l'Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) et président du Scientific and Technological Committee de l'Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT). Matteo Dal PeraroMatteo Dal Peraro graduated in Physics at the University of Padua in 2000. He obtained his Ph.D. in Biophysics at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA, Trieste) in 2004. He then received postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) under the guidance of Prof. M. L. Klein. He was nominated Tenure Track Assistant Professor at the EPFL School of Life Sciences in late 2007.
His research at the Laboratory for Biomolecular Modeling (LBM), within the Interfaculty Institute of Bioengineering (IBI), focuses on the multiscale modeling of large macromolecular systems.
